Has anyone ever done this? Is it profitable in building a list?

    As long as you're building a list and very good with writing compelling email copy then you should be able to make money. But people who're in safe swaps email lists get bombarded with tons of promotional emails and most of them are freebie seekers so you'll need to be very good with copyright and coming up with email copy that will encourage them to buy.

    You can also use bonuses to entice them. Most importantly, you need to separate yourself from the rest. Be different and use stories in your emails, entertain, be human and avoid hard selling. It is possible to make money using safe swaps but it's not going to be easy.
