Should Marketers Follow or Lead?

Should we follow or lead?

There is the argument that one should follow the proven path to success that someone has already blazed.

Then there is the argument that one should be original, innovative and stand out from the pack.

I can remember a Frank Kern email where he did that classic email opens case study and whenever he used the title "Bad News" he got huge amount of opens.

Then the next day I open my special email account that I use just for signing up to different marketers newsletters. I use that special a account to self educate. I take notes on which one actually gets me to open it and why.

And the very next day after that Frank Kern email you already know what happened....I had like 20 "BAD NEWS" email titles in a row!

So my reaction to this is honestly kinda split. If you are using something that is proven to work you would be crazy not to place it in your arsenal and use it if you are going to get results.

But on the other hand....I kinda saw all these different marketers as a herd...not so much as creative individuals...at least at that moment.

Physically and philosophically a path that has the most traffic will be smoother and easier to navigate but one that has been traveled too much may also have some potholes to avoid.

So I figured out that the best route is to know what has been proven to work and then make it yours....meaning tweak it to be uniquely YOU and YOUR style.

Its like sending out one of those pre made affiliate email promotions not realizing that other marketers could be taking the same shortcut and you get lost in the pack when someone opens up their incoming email.

So I say we should make it unique which ever route we take but no need to re-invent every time sometimes just needs a little YOU or a little ME flavor sprinkled in.

My thoughts... a new Marketer should follow the lead of someone who is successful and emulate what they do until they become established and learn the ropes. After that, definitely lead.

Thanks for the laugh with your avatar and profile name.

I totally agree with your comment you have it spot on. I just do not think people need to go the fake it til you make it route. You can still be original no matter what. You can even embrace the newbie niche and do very well in it even as a newbie!

You answered your own question right there...Frank was so successful because he did not follow anyone.

I'm not saying that there's not tons to learn from the experts, but trying to become their clone is not going to be very effective either. Then again, you already said that too.

My thought on this and in life, it's ok to look up to somebody who is more knowledgable and more skilled at you at something in life. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. However you do not want to be an exact replica of somebody, you want to be your own individual with your own personality and edge. Creativity and individuality are what makes you unique as a person. If all you do is follow and not lead you'll get lost in the crowd.

It's all very well following an existing strategy after careful study and consideration of how it might apply to your situation, but most wannabe marketers seem to follow blindly, without thinking it through. That's why every offer price you see ends with a "7". It's either a lazy assumption that if everyone's doing the same thing, it must work - or it's a lack of confidence in one's own judgement.

The example of Kern's "Bad News" heading is a case in point. All those copycats assumed it was solely the particular heading that mattered and rushed to employ this "magic bullet" believing it would impart instant success - without realizing that just about all his results were the culmination of a long process of careful image manipulation and positioning, and the nature of the relationship he had with his followers. And even then, a claimed open rate of around 26-28% (if I remember correctly) would be considered hugely disappointing in any market outside of MMO.

Whether you decide to lead or follow, the best advice will always be to first, think for yourself.

When you are starting out, you should find someone to follow as your mentor. Once you do follow their advice and start to create success for yourself from your own standards, you then become a leader yourself and become a coach/mentor to your team.

When you try to copy someone, you usually end up copying only the part that are visible to you.

Like an iceberg, what visible to you is only a small part, what make the iceberg float is the huge part underneath the water.

When you are copying someone, make sure you understand the philosophy behind the way.

Put your own research into it, put your personality into it, put your own touch into it.

Many big names in the world were follower before taking over as a leader.
Sams*ng was a follower before becoming a leader.
Ac*r was a follower in the pc industry before become one of the big names.
