Hi

I am about to register a domane name and would be grateful for a bit of advice.

Should I go with:

my-domane-name.com

or

mydomanename.net.

Kind regards and thankyou

How about keeping the .com and adding a little suffix so you don't have to put in the hypens?

    Like this:

    mydomainnamea2z.com or mydomainnameinfo.com

If your domain name is a well targeted keyword (I assume it is) then
in reality adding 'info' or 'information' to avoid using hyphens would
probably 'harm' it more than the hyphens, from an SEO point of view.
      - Although when I say 'harm' it is probably minimal.

As far as the Search Engines are concerned there is probably very
little difference between the two - if there is any difference atall.
The hyphens make no difference to the SEs, and nor do the domain
    types.

So really, it comes down to preference and perception. And what
your market might respond to better.

The general perception seems to be that .com names have a greater
value (and that is my perception of the general perception, if you see
what I mean). So I tend to go for .coms if they are available, even with
hyphens - just in case I decide to sell one.

So stick your finger in the air and see which way the wind is blowing.

You should go for .com domain name instead of .net domain. Add some suffix or not but not put the hypens.

If it's a name that you want people to remember then go without the hyphens. For the same reason, you'd probably want to go with a .com, because people will remember the name, but not necessarily the .net. Since .com are embedded in peoples minds, they may end up on a competitors site instead of yours.

If the site will only be seeing traffic that is directed to it, from links or search results, then it doesn't matter, as long as the name is keyword optimized.

If, the domain is your company name and will be your company website, and is something that would not really be that popular, then take the .net, and hope that the .com is given up at some point and keep both. I did that for my company website and it worked out well.
