How Do You Like Being Sold To?

So what is your reaction when you are in the mall or somewhere and you are getting sold to?

Do you pretend to be excited just to be entertained?

Do you coach them on a better close and how to create some rapport first?

Do you just give them the stiff arm?

Do you simply say don't waste your time kid?

How about a MLM presentation (whether you asked for it or not)....can you stop smiling?

Can we turn it off and become innocent consumers or does the marketer come out?

A lady friend took me with her when she bought a used car...that entire staff hated my guts from the salesman to the finance guy...but she got the best deal ever!

The sales mgr sent his write up sheet of paper with his price (full pop plus taxes and tags) and the total..and I wrote a big giant X on the entire paper with a cash offer $2000 below sticker and a smiley face. He took it. (I am not crazy though he probably took it in on trade for peanuts.)

So what is it like being sold to for you? Are you a laydown? Meaning just buy it and get the heck out of there.

As a salesman and marketer myself I absolutely love being sold to.

But it must be the perfect pitch. And I have an especially soft spot for door to door salesman. I started my career as a door to door salesman, so I buy almost anything they are selling.

Wow that is great you are right that is a profession that is no joke...rain, snow, or sunshine! Reminds me of GlenGarryGlenRoss the movie.

I do not feel the same about the Auto Business..they have no problem hammering a little old lady with the worse numbers and contracts and giving high fives about it.

Not all mind you but most.

    Hi,

I love buying what I want to buy Other than that, if someone attempts to force me to buy something, since force negates I sense the desperation. Since force negates, I sense the manipulation. Since force negates, I sense the coercion, but....if someone is really, really good, he doesn't sell me anything, but he makes me want to buy something by stepping into my dream, and making me see that he's there with me. I've seen like 1 or 2 sales people in my life who have so finely tuned their compassion, their mindfulness and their generosity, that they have this rare gift, and hey, it ain't like I have it lol....BUT, I'm blessed, because I genuinely live a dream few on earth live, so my results, my life, my experience and my jokes, along with a dash of blogging tips and stories, attract folks to me, who'll hire me, and buy my eBooks.

Good points on this thread guys.

Selling is the BEST PROFESSION on earth. I love selling and being sold to. I came this far because I allowed someone sell me on internet marketing !!

Don't resist being sold to. The advantages outweighs the cons...

Hmmmmm. A certain legendary marketer is gone and so is the multi quote button that that person used to use alot of....conspiracy!

I do miss that button tho.

Man those comments are awesome I just hate when a salesperson will recommend some FUGLY item that just happened to be the closest thing she can throw in my face and say how about this sir?

Oh yea and one marketer sent out an email and it said the product is free then you click to the website and its free because you will make your money back or he will give you your money back if you do not like it. WHAT?!

If I see something, and I like it, it doesn't matter what the price is. If I see 'enough' value in something, I will buy it (as long as I can afford it).

But there are times when I see something I want, but won't 'over' pay for it.

    Here's an example...

The last car that I bought, I told the dealer that I was going to pay X amount for that car and not a cent more. This was $2,000 less than the price that they were asking.

This vehicle was mint and it did have a lot of value to offer.

Why did I not pay the ticket price?

Because I honestly felt that this vehicle was worth my offering price.

Plus...I wasn't 'hung up' on it.

    I even told them this.

They were not pleased. Finally, I told the manager that I am leaving and he took my offer but hated me for it.

And this was from a 'high' end Mitsubishi Dealer.

The staff there are used to people being told what to do. And this is because most of the people who walk into dealerships pay the asking price.

So in a nutshell, I love to buy but hate to be sold.

To tell you the truth, I am not good at selling

I absolutely 'despise' personal selling. Yes you may see the words 'Network Marketing' below in my signature but that doesn't mean that I will try to sell anything to anyone.

All I do is 'create' targeted traffic, send them to a sales page and let them make up their 'own' minds.

    So back to your question...

I love to buy but hate to be sold.

I have to admit, if a salesperson is nice to me, willing to answer even my dumbest questions and has the patience to put up with me, then I'll probably buy whatever it is they're selling! (if I also need it of course)

The question should not be "How do you like being sold to?"

If you are a marketer, that's your job, it's what marketing is all about. You don't make money if you don't sell something.

The better question is "What types of sales approaches do you respond to and what types turn you off?"

That's the real question that might help us all to figure out if our own "style" is accepted or rejected.

Its funny you should mention this. Over the weekend my family went to Six Flags Amusement Park. Of course it never fails at the entrance there are 4 camera people ( employees) wanting to take your family Photo and then you pay for it.

I do not even want to have to talk to them so I detour off to the right so they cannot talk to me LOL

I know it is impolite but I just feel bombarded

I love being sold to but it has to be subtle. I believe that if you as a marketer can convince me that your product has value and I am able to see that through what you say you are offering, I will buy it. What I hate is a sales letter or a video which just gives me a list of what the product is not about then leave me guessing my way to the buy button. I hate that. Tell me everything about the product without letting the cat out of the bag so that I can make an informed decision. Give me that much respect and I will buy.

NO ONE likes being sold to.

But they LOVE being TOLD what and how something can change
their lives for the better/give them something/ADD value to their
    lives etc.

Then they usually say: "Okay how much"?

Sell the benefits FIRST then ask for the sale.

I'd like to change this to:

No one likes being sold to...

      ...but they like buying.

So if you put into their mind that they've just solved a problem, or they just had a need met, they haven't really been sold. They've bought something they feel a connection with, and so the sales pitch has literally been bought.

Very subtle but significant difference between a customer being sold something and them buying it; and by this, of course, i am referencing mindset and who has the locus of control (marketer or customer; and we're talking about perceived control).

Is the sales pitch so invisible that the buyer thinks themselves intelligent or greatly better of by making this purchase? If the customer feels sold to the trance is broken and the salesman has failed, which adds resistance to closing the sale.

I study all this stuff and apply as much as i can to my own marketing efforts. It's lovely stuff.

Whenever i visit car dealerships, over hear a pitch for someone considering to get a new garage door, or even bank tellers at various banks asking if I'd like to open an account with them I soak it in. Once you have your eyes open to it you see it everywhere.

I certainly enjoy listening and experiencing different forms of sales pitches, techniques, and all the different ways sales people try to keep us in their pitch trance.

        Fantastic insights heavysm!

I wish every sale could be like being the man on the ice cream truck!

Once a MLMer was giving his qualifying questions to me and this was the second time I saw him casually.

He still did not get the hints and taking every nice way of saying no as an opportunity to close...like he was trained to.

But I almost had to raise my voice in public which I never do because to me that is a sign of weakness or losing self control.

He just was not getting it so I had to just walk away mid sentence.

        While I was having lunch.

He was very young and I am sure he probably could just barely pay for the entry fees to join his "opportunity" and I am sure that adds pressure to succeed....so I got over it.

A person really can't be "sold" just by a page, they have to already be self-sold on the concept, which is why they were directed to this page.

I really agree with all the comments above.

When I was a commission only sales person..(thank God those days are gone!)

I mean we still get paid commissions sometimes in marketing but not OUTSIDE in all types of weather!

So anyway I had one philosophy that gave me many many salesman of the month awards.

      Kill them with Kindness....and education.

I used to love to get the stiff arm from a customer that was "just looking". I would say to him/her yea when I shop I say the same thing but.....did you know we have more inventory over there, and we have another location that is hard to find over there and did you know that fresh shipments come in and we put them over there?

They keep their poker face but I know they are eating it up!

I share with them very important insights they should be asking not only me but every other place they go to comparison shop and I tell them they should also be comparison shopping the answers they get to those questions. Then I do something they would never expect...mention my name again and walk away.

My managers would have a heart attack!

But that customer would not buy...even if it was my day off without asking for me by name.

But let me also say sales can be a cutthroat business...you do not get high 5s from your colleagues all the time...you become a human target. It just goes with the territory sometimes.

We all have different selling styles but treating people how you want to be treated has definitely worked for me.

  • I find it weird when people love to sell but hate when others want to sell. I hate the pushy hype people who hate the truth and will say anything aggressively. I like selling that educates the prospect. The used car sales person who pushes you into a corner that I hate and would never do myself.

I don't mind people trying to sell to me. I learn a lot from other marketers. Of course, the type I come to contact with when I'm out and about aren't exactly the greatest at their job.

If somebody does manage to sell something to me that I wasn't already intending on buying, than my goodness I want them working for me because I am extremely hard to sell to.

I personally love mlm presentaitons, I am after all a network marketer haha.

When someone tries to pitch me on something though I just tell them no thanks. I rarely try to coach someone as they usually find it condescending or what usually happens they are so drunk on their own hype and momentum they never read any of the words I'm saying haha.

I prefer selling through educating my prospects - it's the easiest and most fun way.

If someone came to me asking advice on how to sell something, I would tell them go teach about it.

I don't like being sold to at all. I worked a retail sales job for nine months and I was very good at it. I didn't sell, I actually presold. Contrary to what people say, preselling works offline as well. I would talk to the people who came in the store and try to see what they needed. When they told me, I'd point them to the garments that looked like they'd be perfect. Whenever possible, I'd shove it in their hands and let them touch it. If they liked it, I'd start a fitting room for them. If they asked me how they looked, I'd tell them what I thought (tactfully where necessary). They responded to my kindness and honesty by buying it if they liked it. The end. It wasn't selling because I took the time to see what they needed. Because I know that getting someone to buy is more than "selling", I have no patience when I feel that the interaction is all selling, no heart. My experiences as a seller online have shown me that you need to have heart and point people in the right direction, and I applied this at my retail job.
