Get coupons from local businesses. Then post them to your site. Then put flyers up everywhere (laudromat, college campus, especially near the businesses with the coupons).

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I mailed the information to them and dropped off flyers. I also gave everyone a free ad and told them they could keep the ad running for $.

Can I see your site? Did you use wordpress for this?

For promotion, have you tried facebook marketing?

I am also getting a directory site off the ground.

I think the offline techniques are a great idea. But until I get it really going, I am going to keep one level of listing free.

      Any other thoughts out there?

Obviously, you've got to be able to segment your marketing so your local geographic audience sees your promotions.

Business directories are only as successful as the owner's ability to focus in on the local market and the subject market of the businesses in the directory.

So yes, your work is cut out for you because you won't be successful if you only market to the niche followers.

The reason for businesses to be in directories is because they want to get traffic and referrals. So they are relying on you to provide eyeballs and promotion for them.

I'm surprised anyone would go into this type of business without having a plan for promotion of the directory. That's what this business model is all about - promoting the locals.
