Starting a blog in a saturated niche

Hey,

I've never made a single dime with affiliate marketing so I'm 100% newbie. I feel like I'm an expert at photography and could bring a lot of value through tutorial blogging. However I see there are tons of blogs out there covering all aspects of photography already. So just to cut to the chase here are my questions:

Is it worth the time to pursue a niche in a saturated market?

Would I have to make my blog stand completely out, or could I make good money by writing content that exists on other blogs?

    Hello phivu90;

You raised a number of issues with your statement " I've never made a single dime with affiliate marketing":

But first let's deal with the saturated market. Here are some guidelines that could place you in a profitable niche within any so called saturated market.

If the general market is photography and you do a search using Google's keyword planner - you will get a number of keywords that are niches under the general 'photography' category.

Here are some guidelines that had one of my blogs ranking on page 1 search results.

    1. Select keywords with at least 1,000 searches at global monthly level, but avoid those with very high volume search results. List those keywords.

    2. From your list in 1 above enter them one at a time in a Google search to see how many websites respond to the search.

    3. If some words generate for example - 50,000,000 websites you can select words that generate between 50,000 to 5,000,000 websites. Short list those keywords.

That shortlist of keywords is what you will use to select the niche and related products, to explore for online marketing profits.

Get that saturated idea out of your head completely. Especially with photography.

For example if you did a search of a Monument you will see so many photos of the same object and so completely different. Different lighting, different time of day, different angles and so on. So that is the way you need to be thinking...your stuff is unique.

One viral photo on a place like instagram could send you a ton of traffic on any given day.

Also just like Internet Marketing niche newbies enter it every single day...they do not know who the top photography site is. Remember that.

I promise you if you put them first they will put you first.

Give them what they need...you already know some challenges they will have if they are just starting out...guide them the way.

Give them an irresistible freebie to join your list...like the 5 Mistakes you want to avoid as a Photographer Or the Top ways To Get Paid As a Freelance Photog.....who would not click on that?

I am excited for you I think there is a case study of an internet marketer who created a photography site and it shot to the top of search and goes into great detail could be incomediary but I do not think he is a pro photographer at all.

So be confident I think you will do very well.

Completely agree! Market Saturation is myth. With the right positioning and a powerful message, you can separate yourself from the rest of the herd.

    I'd combine your blogging efforts with some more free targeted traffic generation strategies such as;

    - Creating a Youtube channel where you give photography tutorials
    - Starting a regular podcast. You can do Q&A sessions or interview professional and amateur photographers. Maybe even popular photography stores, etc.
    - Create a Facebook page
    - Create an Instagram and Pinterest account to showcase your stuff
    - Cross promote all platforms

There's so much you could do right there it's not funny!

Seriously, being active on all those platforms on a regular basis will bring you in so much targeted traffic you won't know what to do with it.

I personally believe no niche is saturated as such. Even though photography is a highly competitive niche, there is nothing harm to create a solid blog around photography. Who knows with solid unique content and social sharing, you may push to the top slot of Google. Even you can get traffic from long tail keywords. Just give a try.

"Saturated niche" is an oxymoron. If it's saturated, then it's not a niche.

    1_ Are you an ecpert?

2- Are you prepared to stand out from the usual garbage? Be controversial... stir the pot?

EDIT: can you niche it down to a specific demographic such as portraits, architecture, kids, beginners etc?

Remember that competition is a sign of a healty market. If there are no competitors, that's probably a sign that there's no money to be made.

The key I've found to succeeding in these competitive markets is to do your best to retain as many visitors as possible. Push people onto your email list and send them back to your blog over and over again. Get involved with them. Don't let them forget who you are.

If you build the backend of your business well, than you really don't need a huge amount of daily visitors to have success. A few highly engaged readers is a heck of a lot better than a ton of visitors who bounce.

I agree with johnlagoudakis on the youtube channel. Also a word of wisdom.A niche is never saturated and if you have the right marketing methods you can make money on any niche really, some just take alot more work than others

If you have a passion for photography, then you should open your blog without thinking that the niche is saturated! There is no such thing.
I understand you're looking to make money with your blog. Well, in that case, try and make it stand out, writing content that is already on other websites - not a good idea. Write your own ideas, your own views, your own, i don't know, tutorials or whatever it is you're good at.

All profitable niches are going to have competition. Don't let that bother you. It just means that there are more opportunities to make money. When it comes to content creation, it's okay to write about topics that are going on in your niche (should do that), but you shouldn't be plagiarizing from specific blogs and stuff like that. Put your own spin on it -- have personality. Focus on unique, quality content that answers questions to stuff the people in your niche want to know about.

I'd just add that there's no such thing as saturated. Even better, if you find many bloggers talking about this subject, that means that there's a lot of money to be made.

    Take care,

Yes it is worth pursuing however I would be clever about it I'd use this strategy

    1. Go to Facebook and set up a facebook photography group. Use you name to brand it i.e. "Joe Doe Photography Advice"
    2. Work hard on creating new and interesting posts each day and posting a daily photo (you can automate this process by scheduling posts)
    3. Then invite all your friends on facebook and get them to invite their friends etc....
    4. Give yourself a year to develop this group and take the hit that you may not earn any money from it.
    5. Once you've developed a few hundred likes then set up your own blog and use your facebook group like a squeeze page to funnel visitors to your blog.

Facebook groups are awesome for getting a following trust me, I've done it many times.
