Viral business born yesterday makes 200k with no mailing list, established social media or paid ads?

I've notice an influx of new overnight businesses popping up, going viral and selling 200k in days. They have no mailing lists, established social media and don't pay a dime for advertising. How are they able to do this?

Someone mentioned PR blasting, but I honestly don't know a thing about that? Can someone explain the method they would use when PR blasting their business?

It can be very EASY. You launch a product/service by leveraging other people (joint venture).

We did $52,000+ in our first JV, and $120,000+ in our second JV (with no lists)

Please give us a list of all these sites you've noticed. I'd like to see them.

I'm online much of the day and such sites have completely escaped me.

How do you know they don't pay for advertising? The whole viral business relies on paid ads so not sure what sites you're talking about.

Sounds odd to me, how do you know about these sites or that they actually made 200k? Give us some more info and we can advise you properly.

They're gag sites mainly such as:
    Dickbymail.com <---warning adult site or
    Shipyourenemiesglitter.com

The latter is now using paid advertising but did not when they first launched. Just a bit curious how this all works, I've never seen it done before! Thanks for answers so far everyone

If 200k is anything resembling accurate this is a good testimony for newbie to see that ANYONE can make it online in a decent (or indecent) niche and the right promotion. Just look at these sites...

Lol, those are hilarious, especially the first site. I can definitely see that doing some money.

"PR blasting" just means it went viral. What happens is -- they end up getting posted on sites like Buzzfeed, Geekologie, Gawker, and similar sites.

For example, a while back I saw an article on Geekologie about a site that would literally ship a bag of elephant shit to someone you hate.

      The money is the motive.

Emmerson both of these sites are up for sale or were sold on Flippa. Not sure whether they are on the up and up but they do seem so to me at least?!

Sites like ship your enemies glitter are not good sites to model a business after, since it's very difficult to repeat. You have to come up with a totally bizarre and unique concept that catches enough attention to get that kind of free press.

Hey Chris Lee! I'm not looking to replicate or start my own business, I was just curious as to what PR Blasting is and how in the world it's possible these gents were able to have that much success so quickly?! Thanks for your reply, it's definitely a testament to a shot in the dark making it to the bulls eye!

Thanks Antonio! I have to agree, my thoughts were that they either spent days wide awake just sending their links to everywhere and anywhere or have a "silent" partner in crime.

I think the products just went viral like somethings do in this social media world. If you google search the glitter site there are all kinds of artcles about the site like why the owner sold it on flippa and even has a Wikipedia page. On Wikipedia it says that the site was re-posted on facebook and twitter 300,000 times in the first 24 hours. Maybe he simply has a lot of friends who have a lot of facebook followers, just posted it once and off it went.

I saw Dickbymail.com on Flippa. Yeah, looks like a legit thing that went viral. There IS a formulae to getting rich after all:

Create something unique that people like.

Thanks guys! Certainly something new to look at every day! Not sure I have the stomach to handle something like that going viral myself but totally awesome to dream about.

The glitter site went viral on reddit and imgur, no doubt because the site founders spammed it. They made lots of posts with pics saying "look what someone sent me...."

Here's a pretty good interview/article with the guy from ship your enemies glitter and how it spread virally because the media saw it on popular sharing sites and jumped on it. Didn't hurt that he was pretty successful online before this and had many social media followers that jumped on it and spread it as well.
