Do you have any ideas for an event website?

Hello,

I started a website a while ago where people can enter their events, specifically in the crafting/sewing/handmade niche.
I keep on adding one to two events every morning and I see some google traffic coming in (from 0 to 15 people per day within this month).
Then I started interviewing some of the event organisators and ask some questions - many are happy to conduct an interview so I've got 6 interviews online now - 3 of those 6 even put a backlink onto their site without my asking for it.
Bumped the visitors to 30 - 60 per day, but 60 only with Facebook and not steady.

So now I'm wondering how to continue.
Obviously the interviews work well, so I want to do more there.
Evtens are ok for gaining a bit traffic from search engines.
I don't have a FB account/page for this website yet (and no other social accounts)
And I'm wondering how to monetize this site later on.
Had the idea of selling tickets - but not sure about the VAT if the event is in a different country, might get a bit complex.
There are more options (like sewing tutorials/patterns/etc.) but that would take more time/skills/knowledge - any other ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

    Hey Chris-

It seems like you're on the right track; just keep posting events, interviews and other related news to let your site grow. I would recommend, however, for you to focus on events in one particular area though because there's probably 500,000 events worldwide every single day. For you to rank for each area with your two posts per day would be almost impossible to do. I'd personally do the events for your state and then later break it down into counties.

For revenue, there's tons of things you can do once you start focusing more locally. Get affiliate accounts with all the resort hotels, theme parks and other attractions, for example, and then have vacation giveaways by writing hotel chains in your area and asking for comped nights in exchange for free publicity. Once you're focusing more on local places, you can also get any business in that area as a sponsor...so there are almost unlimited ways to monetize it.

    I hope that helps.

This is great advice. Yelp, for instance, focused its entire first year on just San Francisco (see http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/0...hy-yelp-works/ for a brief rundown of how Yelp got started) before branching out into a few more target markets before opening up to more and more and more. This strategy allows you to do two things:
      1. Achieve critical mass. If I'm into crafting, but I only see a handful of events for my area on your site, I'll probably never use your site again. On the other hand, if I see every event in my area that I might be interested in, I'll definitely want to come back (assuming an event website is something I need anyway -- but that's another story!) The point is your site will only become useful when you have gained a critial mass, whether of events or of users posting events. And as kk075 mentions, that's impossible to for the entire world at one time, but quite possible if you narrow down the geographical scope of your site -- at least in the beginning.
      2. Allow you to get to know your target users better. Targeting one specific geographical location will allow you to build deeper relationships with the key people in that location. Through your interactions with these people, you'll likely gain insite into what your target users really want rather than what you just assume they want. This will allow you to make adjustments and ultimately a better site before trying to bring the rest of the world into it.

Thank you all very much for your replies. Some good stuff here.

        Let me elaborate:

I'm only doing Germany (a German site) so it's almost like one state in the US - size wise I reckon. Drilling down to counties would be good, yes. Focusing on a smaller area (one city only) might be quite interesting but the site would stay mostly empty due to so few events in this area. Still - I already get several emails from organisators and an idea here and there.

Many events just take one day - so I guess people are just there for a day, but the hotel thinking might still be a good idea and worth a try with more visitors on the site.

Hmm .. like this standard marketeer things? Sign up for an email course and after 10 mails I'd offer an ebook? Wouldn't it be better to put that stuff on a 2nd site to keep the crafting one clean?

I started with this, but people didn't reply much there to my mails when I told them I'd like to get some comments from them etc. What's your idea - how would this section look like? The list of exhibitors, some pictures, products etc.? That's what I thought of - but seems like a lot of work for not that much benefit for me?

    – Concept Fusion
    – Forking

    – Area Customisation
At the least this just how I like to call up these. In the using section I most certainly will existing a number of event scientific studies that can greater clarify the thought on the central.

I'd be more interested in those who visit the events - not the organisators but rather the end customers of everything (more and I've got some other projects to lead them to for buying products etc.)

Now this is a good idea that I'd focus on. Here I might reach out to those who attend the events as well a bit more. Thanks.

Bit difficult to understand for me .. sorry, my bad. Before going any further with the site, I should try to get some data out of events and requirements around events in my niche?
