Pinging Your Blog?

Hi all,

There was a post somewhere around here with a list of a couple of dozen (or more) sites to ping your blog and the author was suggesting using a good number (if not all) of them.

However, I'd read somewhere else that you only need to use one pinging service since it's intent is to let the search engines (and thus the blogosphere) know that your blog contains a new post (new content). So using more than one pinging service basically creates duplicate content which Google frowns on.

This is contradictory advice. So which is it? How should I ping my blog? (I'm not a blogging expert.)

    Pinging doesn't create duplicate content, and there is no duplicate content penalty from Google as it has been commonly misunderstood. Using multiple ping SERVICES means you will likely double ping many sites because most services use ping lists that contain many of the same sites. Some sites may consider that to be over-pinging or spam.

    A ping service would likely be a site where you would submit your URL to be pinged. A ping LIST is different, it is a list of ping SITES and typically not SERVICES.

    If you ping yourself, then you should have a ping list that has many different sites to ping. For instance, I use the MBP Ping Optimizer and have a long LIST of ping sites within it. I don't use ping SERVICES because I can ping automatically and directly within WP using MBP.
