Appropriate levels of exact match Google Keyword planner tool?

Hi...can someone share with me appropriate levels of monthly keyword volume to target that we get from the Google Keyword planner tool?

I help a small business that has a solid SEO foundation and am looking to increase exposure thru higher volume keywords.

But, I am not confident of the keyword volume I should target?

The site has been live for 18 months, has 209 Root Domains and 808 Total Links (as reported from Moz's Open Site Explorer).

Any insights / info would be great

Thanks!

Only you can decide what is "appropriate" for your market, niche, and business. No one is going to be able to give you anything but a guess. How could they? They don't know your niche prospects, how well the product converts, what the average conversion rate is for your market, and all the other variables that go into keyword optimization.

Hey Steve...I hear ya...but I would still think there are some general 'guidelines'. Like 170 exact matches is too easy / low while 10,000 exact matches is too difficult / high. This is along the lines of what I am trying to ask.

        Gabe,

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you because each niche is different. Not only that, but many will tell you that exact match is too restrictive, that it filters out too many lower cost but converting key words. So I think you just need to do some experimenting and find out what the market tells you about your niche.
