Help Me Identify Potential Income Opportunities

Hello,

Hey guys, I hope this is the right space for this post.

I have had an education-related website for more than 6 years:

Louis Pasteur - The Life, Work and History - Microbiology, Chemistry, Fermentation and Beer

It has become one of the top resources for high school and college students to study the life and work of Louis Pasteur.

As an academic resource, the site has always put an emphasis on quality of information over marketing and profit. However, I feel there is an opportunity to offer additional products/services to visitors (10k+ monthly) that could generate income. I am looking for ideas on how you think I can make this site better and possibly generate some income in the meantime. Thanks!

Improve your website design. Your website will get penalized by google as your mobile is not mobile friendly. You can buy a premium theme from ThemeForest. Get a professional logo designed. Try to brand your website on social media by getting custom covers.

Improve your website loading time. Choose a quality hosting provider. Check your load time: http://fpt.pingdom.com#!/c2UBtt/http...urbrewing.com/

If there are books related to Louis pasteur, you can include amazon affiliate links. Start a forum.

You can also include other related affiliate links. Offer custom services to students for a reasonable price.

Thanks astral. I am very aware of the design problem. The site is 6+ years old and was originally built with Joomla. I am afraid of making the change to a more manageable CMS because of the URL structures.

As far as hosting, I'm very disappointed with my Go Daddy service. Unfortunately I'm paid up for the next two years. I also have 25+ sites hosted there. Just thinking about migrating them makes me nauseous.

I have tried 10+ affiliate programs with no luck. Most of the visitors are high school students with little purchasing power. I've also tried free downloadable games, but most people are not visiting the site on mobile devices, which makes it inconvenient.

      Thanks again for your response!

    Hi U,

    Well done!

You really can have it all; profit, value, etc.

    A few things.

Take off the ad on the top right side of your page. That's the money making widget/slot, where you include an opt in form to build your list.

Start a list through Aweber or MailChimp, build a bond with your readers/visitors, and then you can monetize through your emails.

If I were you, I'd write eBooks, upload them to Amazon Kindle, and prosper through that channel. You know old Lou inside-out it seems Why not package this information into a profitable bundle for a worldwide, mobile audience?

The gear looks very cool; love that idea.

Just get to list building, build those bonds, and as you keep in touch with more of your readers you'll be able to generate income through current channels and through your eBooks.

As for eBooks, they can be 10 K to 15 K words, and you can charge a few bucks.

The idea: get them into as many hands as possible, so your positive reviews, buys and eBook page traffic on Amazon pushes you higher and higher through searches for LP.

    Onward and upward!

    Signing off from Bali.

      Thanks Ryan,

The site content has been static for a long time and does not really offer any ongoing value. Most visitors come for an academic purpose to find information on a particular subject and then use the site URL as a reference in their bibliography. I don't know that the content lends itself very well to an ongoing readership/subscription. Ethically I don't want to prevent students from accessing knowledge by trapping it in an eBook.

I do like the idea of leveraging the traffic into a list. Just not sure what value I have to offer the subscribers once their on it.

Based on what you have written on your post, it seems like your website is already in a position where it has already an audience (10k+ monthly)! I think the next step that you need to do is signing up for an affiliate or referral program. Or better, sell your own product or service on your website!

See how it works. Then if you saw that you're getting success in it, that's the time you think of widening your audience share, improving your site's content and visibility.

This is how business should be done. You take the value first. You obviously have a lot of readers. With what you offer, where would they like to go next?

Do they want to learn more about a specific aspect of his life, maybe there's some aspect of him they want to emulate, and you could create a course that teaches the psychology and mindsets readers can use to emulate him? Or videos?

Just think of what your audience would want after being exposed to your content as the "next level", and develop products around it.

Thanks Chris. There certainly are areas of the site that students seem to flock to. Perhaps I'll take a look at the top 5 areas and look for areas of possible expansion that would include paying activities. I really want to keep information free and easily obtainable. This has been the main goal and reason for success on the site since inception.

Definitely! Just think about if you were in their shoes, what would grab your attention? Just offer them the experience you'd want yourself.

If they know you're offering quality and want to help them, they'll be happy to pay a fair price for someone doing work to help them develop and grow themselves.

The important key is you have a relationship and credibility as an expert, so you have that teacher relationship with them, and they will trust you if you offer products, and grow the relationship with them.
