I would just like to ask if a number in a domain name makes it less reputable or any other negative effect on the brand? I am trying to build a website similar to Fiverr, and one really cool domain name I came up with is people4task.com

Would really like to hear your opinions.

Sorry, I don't think that name is cool at all

I would go for a shorter and more brandable name personally - that name doesn't sound or look that good to me.

To answer your question, no, a number in your domain does not make you less reputable. A great example is Addicted2Success.com. A very popular and reputable site about motivation and success. Use them as an example.

I think it sounds good and should not make any difference to it's ranking potential.

Using number in domain name is to make it sounds more friendly. For example, in my country, Malaysia, there is a bank uses maybank2u.com.my

It has nothing to do with cool or not cool, it is about easy to remember and sound friendly and warm.

Numbers have no bad effect on domain name. It's just a matter on how the number fits in and makes it a catchy name. like w3schools, example5 , 2createawebsite and many more...
I don't think there is any problem with people4task.
In my opinion, it makes sense, you can go for it.....

the only time it really matters is for people that type the site name in the url bar. They might not know if it is 4 or for. But if you get both and use a 301 redirect on the "for" domain then you solved your problem

My friend.. Al already touched on the point that I was about too so I will not mention that. However I see the names al mentioned along with their plurals are all available at the moment.

Do keep in mind that this is an Internet Marketing forum with many users launching new projects all the time so be sure not to sleep on getting important tasks done... like registering your desired domain names

Personally, I don't think "reputable" is the problem with a number in the domain name. Can it be confusing? Yes, without question.

For that reason alone, I wouldn't choose to use it. Are there other better, less confusing names to register? Yes, of course.

Since you've explained what you're doing with the site to all of us, people4task makes sense. But you don't get that luxury when someone just sees or hears your domain name. It could mean anything.

I personally prefer a two or three word domain that makes sense when you say it. "People for task" is not a natural phrase and it could be confused with many other types of sites.

As to it being a "cool" name . . . that's a very subjective judgment. I don't see it as cool personally, but that's just me. It sounds contrived and forced, but others may not see it that way.

I think you could do much better.

I think it comes to a conclusion, what you need is a good branding for your domain, and a good branding will come to what value you provide in that website.. a good domain name will be cool , but what more important is the branding.. =)

Ok I get what you mean, and after thinking for a while you are right it does sound kinda forced. But thats my very big stopping phase, choosing a good name that will go nice with the website. I am trying to come up with 1 for a week now and all sound kinda not professional, got any more suggestions?

I think it is one of the best domain name you already choose. I think the name of the domain & the objective of the site will be same. so it is plus point of the domain. Thanks. carry on. Here I would like to suggest you to calculate the commission is 10%. The Fiverr is deducting 20% of the total amount of the earnings of the freelancer. While most of the freelancing site cut 10% only. in this case if you use the 10%, many freelancer will be addicted to work on your site.

      Hi e73,

I think it's a really good name for what you want to use it for.

Unfortunately someone has already registered it. (I hope it was you.)

Coincidentally, they just registered it today, April 7, 2015.

Now it's a premium domain with a purchase price of about $800.

And if it wasn't you, consider it a lesson in talking about a domain in public before the name is actually secured.

    Perhaps you are over-thinking it?

If your brand becomes known and people actually type the URL in their browser in-correctly, then their browser will say something like, "Did you mean..."

I don't even bother with spelling as I know Chrome will set me straight.

  • No, a number in a url doesn't reduce reputation for SEO.

However, if I was you I would go for a shorter, catchier name.

Model fiverr, there name has just 1 word (Instead of 3)

I don't really like it but that doesn't matter. No matter what you pick you will need to put in the same amount of work. I don't like numerals to replace words except in some rare cases. To me it always looks a little cheesy, less professional, or simply trying to be clever or cute.

Here are a few available possibilities. Remember exact match doesn't help much anymore:

    onlinetasker.com

    hiretasks.com

taskerhirer.com (Kind of a tongue twister but maybe memorable.)

    taskerizer.com

    taskunite.com (Uniting outsourcers and workers)

Note: I checked using Namecheap and they were available. They have recently started doing like GoDaddy and will sometimes a few hours later claim a domain is no longer available. I tested it with something absurd like lkjewrnoiugvnliewu9876.com. I still use Namecheap but I don't like that they are doing this.

I liked onlinetasker.com and it's still available for registration the last time I checked.

Fiverr clones are ten a penny, just wby would anyone go to your site when they can go to Fiverr or the other that established themselves?

Why would someone list their jobs on your site when Fiverr has the traffic?

Why would somone come to your site looking to get work done when nobody is listing their tasks?

You are going to build a site all from scratch copying another site but offering nothing unique?

Then you add the awful number domain, I am sure Fiverr are really worried about losing market share.

If you are going to make a success of something there needs to be a secret sauce, something that comes from YOU.

One of the rules of thumb for a decent domain is...if you say the name to someone on the phone, can they spell it correctly? If so, it's good. If not, dump it.

people4task.com would require explanation over the phone that the 4 is a number and not the word "for", so you should reject that domain.

And beside that, it's not a "catchy" domain. Sounds odd and nothing memorable about it at all.

Well, I might be late, but I think I will give you some decent info here , I own 800+ domains and most of them are brandables, The key thing to a brandable is the following :
    1) should contain 2 syllables at most. All the examples above dont apply
    2) Passes the radio test... for example if you tell someone over the phone bavia.com , then its a GREAT domain as if you tell it to someone over the phone, its a 100% spelled correctly most of the time.
    3) maximum 2 misspels could come out of it. all the above examples, you have to spell them character by character to tell them to someone!

Think of something thats brandable and could create a name for you in teh market. fiverr, FLickr and others did the same...
for example, I just sold EasierTax.com for a financial firm. Thats a typical great brandable name!

If you are willing to spend something and build a really bid business, then buy it from the aftermarket and not hand register the name. you can goto Brandbucket.com or Namerific.com these have great brandable domains for sale. You will need to pay at least 4 figures to buy a decent name, but you will find great ones in there.

If you want to hand register, then try your best, exert effort, AND TIME to adhere to the guidelines I put above. Believe me, you will need this, as once a domain is in place, its a one way ticket!
    GOOD LUCK

Bold move, competing with Fiverr and other similar websites!
Having a number in the domain name is ok, many have done it and many will do it in the future as well. I hope you have a good plan though, you're gonna need one to compete with the big freelance websites out there!

Domain seems fine. All boils down to your execution in my opinion. I've never thought that domains play a huge role in success. Look at entrepreneurs-journey.com. He breaks every rule in the book (super long, hyphenated name with a complicated first word)...he makes millions.
