How do I create a social networking site like the old myspace?

I want to create a music page for a specific genre of music. I want it to be like the old Myspace where people can add a song to their profile, and bands can come and add their music, and create band profiles.

Is this complicated to do? Or is there a way to this myself by buying a template or something like that. I can't afford to hire a web designer at the the moment.

There are some popular social networking scripts out there..Some have plugins that will do what you're wanting (I believe)...The most popular is probably phpFox. Aside from them, you could also look at Dolphin and SocialEngine.

Before you get too excited about setting up your own social network platform, make sure you invest in SEEDING IT with members.

You will need to hire somebody to create a couple thousand fake accounts with pics, bios, etc to make your site look active. This is pretty standard procedure.

A quick google search will offer a plethora of scripts available to build a social site.

Nice, icoachu. Love the 'Empty Restaurant Syndrome' wording. After the Google+ ghost town, I'd be wary. But hey, Pinterest is kicking butt, so....

  • So you want to build a music site like myspace for a specific genre.

Ok. Well, building it will be the easiest part.

Running and growing it however, will be the kick in your ars.

The part where (if) you manage to gain traction and people come in droves ans start uploading files, files and more files, and your hosting provider calls you because you failed to pay last months $50,000+ hosting bill.

I've seen many of these great ideas come and go.

Usually they end up shutting down due to not figuring out before hand how they are going to earn sufficient revenue from all that traffic in order to keep up with the "realistic" costs of running it.

This is of course is only one tiny part of things to consider.

    Employees, maintenance, etc...

Fees to pay your lawyer ( when... not, if ) you get sued for something...

Anyone feel free to add to this...
