Do You Promote To Your JV List?

Hey All,

I just got an email from a well known marketer who I've been promoting. I recently stopped because the EPCs were pretty poor.

The email is promoting some really newbie level training. I un-subbed.

I never promote to my affiliates and state this very clearly on my sign-up.

So, I am wondering if you promote to your JVs, and if so, how is that working for you?

I must admit I was a bit surprised at this guy. If it had been for a new product to promote, I would have at least checked it out and may very well have promoted it. Instead they lost an affiliate who has made sales for them.

Makes no sense to me...how about you?

    Brent,

I think it all depends upon the relationship that is established when you agree to work with each other.

If, as an affiliate, you understand and agree to the product owner's terms of service stating that he will be sending you offers as well as notices of products to promote as an affiliate, then he has the right to mail to you.

But if you only sign up to learn of his affiliate offers then it seems you shouldn't be on his marketing list.

I guess I'm saying that things should be spelled out up front. If they are not and you don't want his spam . . . just unsubscribe and let him know that you won't be promoting his offers any longer.

  • This is one of those situations where we are able to stand on all sides of the fence,
as marketers, as affiliates, as JV partners, and as consumers of products.

At times we can be all four of these in one day, and we should therefore try to accept the fact that when someone emails a product we may not like or support, this person is just doing what comes natural. Mailing out a promo. Clicking "send" without segmenting their list etc.

You obviously feel that you have been making sales for this person,
so how dare he send you that email as a thank you?!

But in a way, that's the game ain't it?

I don't know that any marketer should have a "do not market to" list of people,
but there are surely marketers in my circle of connections that I respect more than others,
and that I do not send generic promotional emails to.

If I have just completed a new product, I will connect with them on Linkedin, or email. or here on WF, or Facebook, etc... and actually have a convo regarding a product or launch etc.

The list you were subscribed to, I suppose was his "list of Affiliates", and he may not have considered that list to be his list of "valued JV connections".

    Or so it appears.

Are you sure you should have unsubscribed fro that product owner's list? After you may be on some of his other lists than his JV Partner list.

It's not so bad if you just unsubscribed to that one particular list and none of the others.

I never send affiliate promotions to my JV Partner list. But when I'm promoting my own products I always mail to the JV Partner list with some changes asking them to promote my product if they missed the prelaunch notices. I always include the promotional email below so they can add their affiliate link and use it as a swipe email.

But unsubscribing just because you did not like the product that was offered would mean that you would eventually unsubscribe from just about every list you are on if that is your criteria for unsubscribing.

I hope this has been helpful,

    Here's how I see it...

A JV list is for recruiting affiliates to promote your products so I would think that you want to only send them info related to your products and launches.

A subscriber or customer list is meant to promote products to them.

But in all cases you want to provide value to all lists.

That's just my 2 cents worth...
