How to start for a marketing business

Hello everyone,

I have decided that I want to build my own marketing business, where I offer services such as SEO, website creation, copywriting etc starting with offline clients and gradually expanding to online. I am planning to open it in the summer, when I have an extended vacation time, and spend now until then learning everything I can.
However, I am at a bit of a loss as to where to start my research. I know the brief foundations of Internet marketing but I need to learn more about the complex things that will put me in the right position to start this business. I don't want to waste time reading meaningless content, so I was hoping that anyone can share their recommendations of good information sources with me. I will appreciate your help so much.

Thank you!

Selina

I recommend staying away from being a full-service online marketing agency that does everything for everyone. I recommend specializing, and creating a unique selling proposition to differentiate yourself from the bazillion other general agencies out there.

By specializing, it'll also cut back your learning curve as you won't need to learn everything there is to know about online marketing.

I made the "generalizing" mistake early on when I had an agency, after I focused on becoming a paid traffic lead generation expert in my market and it was MUCH better. You can more easily position yourself as an expert, and get more clients this way.

Make sure you publish good content and try to establish yourself as an authority...

Here are some recommendations for information on various topics:

For SEO, I recommend Backlinko.com - he also sells an SEO course but it only opens up a few times a year.

For copywriting, I'd look into books and info products by Dan Kennedy / GKIC.

Media buying, check out Chad Hamzeh's Traffic Blackbook course.

Search PPC, Perry Marshall is the king.

Website creation, everywhere on the internet for free!

    Direct mail, me

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Selina,
There's a very good course here on WF called "The Well-Paid Content Writer" by John Coutts. While the course focuses on finding writing clients, most of the material can also apply to your startup marketing business as well.

He details some very good ways to reach out to people, both locally AND online. Most things can apply to your business, in my opinion, as the message and promotion efforts are essentially similar in nature.

Anyway, other than the above, I recommend that you reach out to local/small mom and pop shops in your area, as many of these have a serious lack of exposure. These people would be impressed if you play your cards right with your approach. Offer a good discount on website creation and monthly maintenance (perhaps by creating 1-2 monthly posts about their latest products), all while teaching them the importance of good copywriting.

    • Thank you so much! That's so helpful, I really appreciate your advice.
I'll check out those courses now.
I'm trying hard not to generalise but I want to keep my options open, so I might offer only three or four services and see where it goes from there.
I'm interested about the idea of generated leads though, I'll have to look into that more.

My main aim is to reach out to small businesses at first, but I am so unsure about where to price my services, do you have any approximate ideas?
