Number of Articles: which one if better?

Who knows? Really, who knows? None of us here know. I know most of them will go with the former option but I'm telling you, if you're able to optimize for 10 articles to rank well, why not do it 10 more times? Just my thought.

Anyways, it depends on the niche. Writing 100 articles will give you good sales and great credibility.

This is how it should work - Write 30 articles and optimize 15 of them. If you get good sales, then optimize for the rest. If you don't get good sales, wait for a week, relax and then start optimizing the rest 15 and I'm sure you'll make at least 6 - 8 sales.

one article in top ranking with low competition long tail keyword will bring more traffic than those 100 articles that don't rank for any keyword, but this doesn't mean that those 100 articles are completely useless, as gskesavan said they do add to your credibility. And writing an optimized article that has a chance of ranking top in SERPs is not same as writing 100 random article even if in the same niche. Articles that rank well are usually written with properly researched contents both for readers and for search engines

definitely 10 that rank well, imo, it is just a little more effort on your part. if you are willing to do 100 articles, 50 articles that rank well should not be an issue.

it has to be ten that work well and provide you with decent positions. They you write another top ten posts.

No contest. Even 1 top-ranking article will pull more traffic than 100 that are not ranked well in a lot of niches. Real world example... on one of my EzineArticles accounts I have about 40 non-ranking articles that have gotten around 40,000 views. Roughly 1,000 apiece on average. Most of them have been there for a year or longer. Then I have exactly ONE article using a pen name under that account that ranks on the first page of Google for a decent keyword, and it has almost 3,000 page views since April of this year. I'm sure you can do the math there. It's no contest.

The way to do it is to build a keyword list first, then drill down it and write articles around each of them. Then go out after the article is posted and get backlinks pointing to the article page with anchor text that is the same as the keyword you've targeted. As long as you didn't pick keywords with a lot of competition, you'll get Page 1 rankings without a lot of backlinks. That's the way to do article marketing, short and sweet.

It depends on why you are writing articles.

If you are creating articles for long tail keywords, then I'd go for articles that rank well for SEO.

But my question is, why would you want to write articles that suck in terms of SEO traffic? That means no one cares about the topic!
