Traffic generation: Yet another reminder of why you should build a list

Most people understand the value of lists when it comes to affiliate sales.

However, if you build new sites into different sub-niches of the overall niche you specialize in, your overall niche list can do wonders in 'seeding' your new site with potential loyal fans.

A friend just put up a new site and needed a boost. I ran a free solo ad on my related niche list for his KNOW STAGE site (there are 3 stages - know-like-trust) and here are the results within 24 hours of the campaign.

Here are the results. Note the 'before' and 'after' New sites need a traffic boost to jumpstart their overall traffic flow and community formation. The problem is if you don't build a list, you can't get that boost unless you pay for that traffic.

This highlights the fact that you need to get a list going on all your sites. Use that list to provide 'seed' traffic to get a loyal audience base going.

FACT: The vast majority of people that visit your site WILL NEVER COME BACK AGAIN... unless you give them a reason to come back. Your list is the key!

PS. Another reason why you need to SEED your new sites with sub-niche or niche-related traffic is because you can use that established traffic base to grow your site with internal traffic using their 'best content' preferences.

What was your list size in order to be able to provide that much traffic boost? Nice results and I agree that list building is the base of all IM strategies. Building a list no matter which way you are marketing on line will always be a benefit to you. thanks for sharing this.

The total list size is 2500. Since the solo ad was a freebie, I didn't really put in that much time in tightening up the title of the email.

I share results. If I can do it, you can do it too. Always remember: whatever results other people achieve, you can do it too. It all boils down to reducing the process into steps and numbers. You need numbers (STATISTICS) to produce predictable results.

    Hi Rick,

Good points all around. I feel if you use social well, really well, and make friends, good friends, you'll get return visitors because you'll be unforgettable. I know I am lol....not in a cocky way, but in a way that friends will always remember friends....BUT...that list building thingee helps you make friends more quickly and easily, and it helps you maximize your contact, and to expand your reach, because most folks will check their email daily, but won't necessarily check social daily.

I see it as a convenience thing. Before I started list building people would come around to my blog in a few days maybe, or, in a week, but once I built my list people commented on my posts and bought my eBooks in minutes sometimes, or even within seconds if that seems possible Because again, people check their email and keep an eye out for what I have to say, to keep abreast of my blog updates, and naturally the traffic and sales jump as I become closer to these folks, as I build bonds, and as my list grows.

I'd also add, the value you give to your list determines the quality and volume of traffic. Make your emails or blog posts good, in-depth and helpful, and you'll really see some sick benefits of list building, that will make ya wonder why some never build a list.

That's true. A targeted list is THE best source of traffic. I wonder why people don't consider it as often as they should.

True, there is some work involved to set everything up, but once that's done, it's pretty much automated, what with the scheduling and autoresponder features offered by most autoresponder companies.

Also, it's the best form of repeat traffic. You can get multiple sales from the same person.

It still amazes me how so many people do NOT segment their lists.

They send the same offers/recommendations to everyone on their
lists who are interested in different things.

You can easily check your click and open rates and see who is
actively opening certain emails regarding certain topics.....

......And BINGO you can now add these people to a list that better
    suits their needs.

So if they are opening emails about building traffic then you now know
    exactly what they're after.

More sales, less stress, clear and concise measurable marketing through
    list building and email marketing.

This is true to a certain extent, but it isn't going to have the power that you are making it out to be. Only a tiny percentage are going to join the list. That isn't going to make up for the vast majority who never return. You'll need to look at site quality to address that issue.

It would be difficult to seed a new site with list traffic unless the list is massive. A more common approach is to seed the new site using other sites in your network with a similar target demographic.

That graph you posted shows only what happens when the site is mailed out. What it doesn't show is that in the coming days the traffic will sink back down to where it was previously at. You could then mail again, but it would be a similar story.

You're going to need other sites that you own, ad buys or SEO.

Thank you for the great input. Much appreciated. I agree that email traffic 'seeding' should be part of of a COMPREHENSIVE multi-track approach for traffic. However, email is the key to getting people who sign up to come back. It gives you a scalable asset that can grow with time.

However, it can help provide a powerful push for building site brand loyalty especially if the content are linked up properly and gives visitors enough of an incentive to come back.

Below is another site I am involved with. Notice the long-term growth in traffic? Part of it is due to email seeding (Green arrow) and other initiatives. This leads to sustainable growth (Red arrow and beyond) Email should definitely be a key part of any traffic generation and retention strategy.

I, too, was wondering how it would look if you extended the timeline out.

It only makes sense to have a list. I know my lazy a** is going to be more likely to read an article that ended up in my e-mail, which is on my phone, that I look at multiple times a day (i know, terrible habit), than if I have to go to the internet and search it out. Thanks for the case studies.

There's about a month between your email and the sudden upwards trend. So there is more to that second graph than meets the eye. The email effect was minor, though worth sending. What caused the upswing a month later?

That's a decent use of a list, but ref traffic from other sites is the dominant source of traffic.

Here's a little case study on the traffic power of a site like Drudge.

Good point icoachu! So you combine landing page site 1 + new site. You inform the list that you get from the landing page site 1 to visit your new site. Is that how it works?
