How do you accept payments from Germans?

Clickbank only accepts credit cards, debit cards and PayPal.

Unfortunately, 75% of German-speakers do not use credit cards. Instead they use either cash or European bank account transfers.

I have confirmation from customers in Germany and Austria that PayPal requires a credit card in order to register at paypal.de or paypal.at, so that's not an option.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how a US-based business can accept payments from the 75% of German-speakers who do not use credit cards?

Thanks very much in advance.

John

That doesn't make sense to me. The US paypal accepts accounts that only use a bank account, I don't see why the German one wouldn't. You just have to verify the bank account.

We also can't create recurring billing links & buttons. Paypal in Germany is tied hardcore to eBay, and ONLY for the use with eBay. I am happy that we can send money and subscribe to recurring billing...

All those slick features Paypal offers in other countries are either not available to us, or not documented and I have to experiment and test around to get things working.

I highly doubt that. Because i am with PayPal and i dont have a CC tied to my account. Although my business checking acc is tied to my paypal account.

Are you a German? Here's the exact quote from an email I got today: "Bei Paypal muss ich aber auch eine Kreditkarte eingeben." (I get this sort of email all the time.)

What should I say in reply to the person?

i really think he refers to some subscriptions where you need a CC, but i am almost sure you do NOT need a CC just for signing up with paypal.

          It's for a one-time sale, not a subscription.

What should I say to the German prospects who tell me almost every day that they need a CC to sign up with PayPal?

          Thanks for your help.

    2. you do not need to have a credit card to send payment via paypal. So your customers can just link their paypal to their bank accounts

    1. To be a seller you might need a credit card. So be part of the 25% of german who has a credit card

In Germany and Austria you do. That's why I posted the question.

you don't need a credit card to sign up with paypal in germany.
Often the payment screens are a little confusing as when you want to pay with PP it offers a payment form (for entering address and CC data) on the left and only on the right is the log-in form to PP where you release the money with.
When you create a PP account in germany, you are asked to verify it by linking it to your german bank account. This is probably because PP is a bank too and needs something to verify the accountholder as there is no signing of a contract in personal presence.

Hope this makes sense - and good luck with doing business with us germans

Do these Germans actually have an existing paypal account, or are they trying to pay with paypal without setting up an account? The second one might require a credit card, although I'm not absolutely sure. I know for certain that both private and business German paypal accounts can be tied to a bank account for payments made by direct debit, without using a credit card.

I don't know about paypal Austria, though.

I realize that the answers don't really settle your problem -- it won't help your customers if you keep repeating "but I know you can use paypal without a credit card but I know you can..." If it would help to illustrate this process e.g. with a couple of screen shots, send me a PM and we'll work that out.

And back to your original question: I don't have any better suggestion than paypal.

        Hello again,

I checked back with the customer support of Paypal Germany, and they told me that if a customer sets up a new Paypal account based on a bank account/money transfer, they have to verify that bank acocunt first. For everybody's convenience, I include both the answer of Paypal and a translation below.

This means that usually the customer would have to wait for a couple of days until the verification process is completed, as this process is tied to a money transfer to the bank account in question.

Please note that they write "in general", the bank account would have to be verified -- I've no clue what kind of a purchase would not be "in general".

If anybody is looking for other payment processors in Germany, a German IM blog recently posted a list of trustworthy payment processors. You would have to check out if any of them transfers money to the US (or wherever you live) in an acceptable way, though -- I've never checked that. The blog post is at Liste seriöser Zahlungsanbieter für den Verkauf digitaler Informationsprodukte | Digitale-Infoprodukte.de (please note that I am not related in any way to this blog or its owner).

        Hope this helps,

        milkyway

Answer by Paypal Germany to the question whether a new private Paypal account based on a bank account/money transfer (i.e. no credit card) needs to be verified before the Paypal account owner can make their first purchase via this account:

        My translation:

"In general, a new customer needs to verify his/her Paypal account by entering the values of the two small money transfers, before he/she can use Paypal for a purchase based on money transfer. The credit of those small transfers usually takes 2 to 4 working days. If you want to speed the process up, though, there is another way to verify the bank account: You can transfer a small amount of money (at least 1 Euro) to your new Paypal account. This small amount will be credited to your Paypal account after 2 to 3 days. If you simply transfer the amount of the planned purchase, you can then transfer it to the merchant immediately after it is credited to your Paypal account." [my comment: and how would I know a couple of days in advance how the exchange rate dollar-Euro is going to be at the day of purchase?? ]

It's still BS, excuse my english. You know why?

Because even if my (business!) paypal account is tied to my business checkings account and i can transfer money back and forth from paypal to my bank (and vice versa) i can NOT use my paypal acount for subscriptions. For subscriptions you still need to tie a CC to the paypal account <-- Which doesnt make sense because the checking account also acts like a "safety" in case the paypal funds wouldn't be sufficient.

I really have to complain about this to paypal germany because it doesn't make sense. I try to get into linkjuicer and cant because i cant use subscrptions....

That being said, no, just for getting into paypal and do any business (except subscriptions) you dont need a CC.

Georg, I agree that it's less than comfortable, both the subscriptions and the fact that the customers have to verify their bank account first (which means a delay of a few days and a serious hurdle for a purchase). If you have any suggestions other than paypal...

Jesse, and for the merchants who don't drink that much, we would have to send sausages and sauerkraut?
