Social Media Usernames

In your experience, which works better with your social media accounts... using your name as the username, or what your business is about? I know it's the "social" that makes social media what it is, but what if you use the latter and your real name is clearly visible on your profile page?

I think it is fine to use your business name on a social media profile. Especially if you are worried about people having your real name. I find that the most important factor of a social media site is having a picture of yourself, or if you are making a strictly business profile then using something pertaining to the business is fine. If you need help with social media accounts I had a great person help me, PM me for details.

It all depends... Do you want to brand your business or brand your self?

How does your name show in status reports, messages and other notifications?

By that, I mean which of the following is more likely to be ignored and/or junked by the recipient?

    A) XYZ Marketing has added you as a friend.

    B) Matthew Keith has added you as a friend.

If you don't get past the initial contact, they'll never see your profile page.

Another option, for the social networking sites that allow it, is to have a business user account and a personal user account.

Then you can use your personal account to help drive people to your business account.

Its best to use your name, if its long use a shortened version. Only well known businesses benefit from using their business name.
The idea with social marketing is to get to know each other. Using a business name is impersonal and it could make one feel like youre trying to sell them something.

Great points, guys, thanks. It kinda sucks for me though because my niche (minisite design) is becoming hugely popular but was available on all of the social media sites I use, and my name, which is not, is already taken for a couple of the main ones. I'd hate to have to use matthewkeith123 as my username. Not sure what to do here
