Top of Google Places

Hi friends,
I have a small doubt regarding Google places. What are all the procedures or steps needed to bring the keywords on top of Google places? By doing normal SEO process is enough or we need to concentrate more on business listings, local SEO, maps etc.. Please I request you to suggest me some valid points... thanks

FYI, it's no longer called Google Places. That changed almost a year ago.

Now the public page is just called Google Local or Google+ Local.

And the business owners interface and dashboard is called Google My Business.
