Keyword research question

How do I check how many competing sites have my longtail keyword in the title? I've been looking in the advanced search preferences in google but don't see anything like that. I gotta do it the hard way for now until I can afford micro niche finder or market samuai, so any help is appreciated, thanks!

It depends. What do you plan to do with the keyword? Use it in a blog? Get some inbound links? Write articles? The more you plan to promote it - the more competing sites you can afford to compete with.

I suggest you test it out for yourself. Take a keyword with few competing sites (maybe less than 1,000) and then see what happens. Ramp it up slowly and test.

i never use intitle check for my keywords.
instead, i just use 'keyword phrase" check and targeting for keywords with less than 80 000 in google, 50 000 in yahoo

it works for me so far..not so hard to get to the top

A good rule of thumb that I use is :

If your keyword phrase has more than 1000 searches per month and less than 10k competition ("searching in quotes") then it is an Excellent Keyword phrase for you to use with article marketing. Ezinearticles is the best for article marketing IMHO . I do 1 unique(not spun) article per day for 21 days and traffic is on autopilot after that.

    Good Luck

That sounds a lot easier than checking competing sites for incoming links, page rank, and all that. Maybe I'm being too nitpicky with analyzing the competition? I still have yet to get any articles out there.....maybe I should just start out simple and not worry about getting everything perfect the first time. Thanks!

You should also download the SEO Quake plugin. That is a good tool for going further than just checking competing websites. It will show you the backlinks, PR, Alexa ranking, age of site , etc.

Most of this is subjective. You'll get answers all over the map about how many competing pages and how many monthly searches to look for, etc. Here's something to think about...

I don't have a link to the stats on this, but something like 40% of searchers will click on the #1 listing at Google. That percentage drops sharply from there on down the list. So, would you rather rank #1 fairly easily for a keyword that only gets 500 monthly searches, or #10 with a lot of your time invested getting there for a keyword that gets 5000 monthly searches?

It's not a trick question. Crunch some numbers. For the keyword getting 500 searches, if you rank #1 that's about 200 visitors to your site per month (500 X .40 = 200). For the keyword getting 5000 searches, you would need a 4% click rate to reach the same number of visitors per month (5000 X .04 = 200). That's possible, but might be somewhat optimistic.

Here's the kicker, though. You won't have to put in nearly the same time and effort to get a #1 ranking for many keywords at the 500 monthly searches level as you would to get a #10 ranking for a competitive keyword getting 5000 searches. Time is money.

Here's the kicker, part 2. The trick is finding keywords in your niche that satisfy BOTH: they get higher monthly search volumes AND have very low competition. They are out there in pretty much every niche, but they are harder to find. In my experience, however, they are well worth the extra time invested to find them. Just one really good keyword with a high ranking can generate a ton of traffic.

I'm developing an all in one app that does a lot of these things. I think it's handy to be able to analyze stats etc at a glance. To do it manaully can take a while and make it harder to evaluate.
