In today’s, press releases will provide more indirect value than direct value. Direct value comes when the press release URL itself is ranking in SERPs, which is possible, albeit rare.

The real gold of a press release lies in the indirect value. If your press release is unique, eloquent, valuable, and attention-grabbing, a newspaper, media outlet, or other blog is more likely to pick it up and champion it. When they do so, your blog/website gets that golden link, mention, citation, buzz, referral traffic.

Not nearly effective as it was 5 or 6 years ago.

    Thanks guys.

I know it's not as effective or easy as previously, but wondered if anyone is actually making it work in some shape or form.

    Anyone else?

A bit effective on high traffic PR websites. They bring some traffic with attractive titles.

  • I like press releases. I think they are one of the most cost effective ways to bring in traffic. The internet is still content driven so they still work. You can get contextual links in them which are the best kind. If you have a good, relevant title and keywords, they still work well.

I completely agree...press releases can still deliver massive amounts of traffic, press interviews and quality backlinks if you know what you are doing. The story itself has to be newsworthy though and something that's going to grab the attention of the guy sitting at a news desk as thousands of other releases get dropped.

Like everything in the world of online marketing, press releases have been beaten to death with spam and lousy execution...so they're definitely not as powerful as they once were. But I drop paid, syndicated press releases for my clients frequently and they almost always pay for themselves. You have to figure that one PR9 backlink could cost you thousands through traditional channels, so $200-300 for the paid release is a bargain.

If it's press you want, PR distribution services are somewhat of a joke.

You'd be better off trying to get an exclusive for a real news sites. Major publications. Sites that have traffic and are trusted. Yes, startups can if you have something of value to offer and know how to do it. They talked about how in the WAMA the other week.

This is a good move by Google and a highly positive trend. Obviously it's a right place for good traffic. If you have quality backlink it works for you.
