Protecting my video course

Hi;

I use Vimeo Pro which is one of the most secure CDNs around. Videos can only be accessed from my domain name etc etc (similar to S3).

Saying that users can always screen record the videos. Is there anyways to protect my videos from being shared on different platforms? Let's say some one screen records and uploads to youtube.

At least what's the best way to copy right them and in case that happens I can claim the ownership and get youtube etc to bring it down.

Yoda wasn't happy.

As a creator of the material, you automatically have copyright on the works. So, if anyone was to share and upload to something like Youtube, you just send a DMCA notice to them take it down. That being said, most people who are looking to rip your site, won't do it just to upload to a free site. They either, want it for themselves and don't want to pay, or worst case, upload it to a blackhat site where people (who almost never pay anyway) will download it.

So protecting your content is a multi-step process. First, you already have one portion, using Vimeo Pro and restricting content to a particular domain.

Second step, put your videos behind a member paywall or membership system like Digital Access Pass. This adds another layer. You can also use Wishlist which is popular. I don't particularly use them since it seems easier to get into a wish list site compared to DAP.

Finally, if you have the budget, there are companies that will monitor your content and send DMCA notices on your behalf.

Like people say, its impossible to stop them but the more layers you put in front of them, the less worthwhile it is for them to try.

  • If you see people copying your videos (That you own the copyright to)

Just contact the person and contact youtube, vimeo etc and they will remove it

The sad reality is that if people want to STEAL YOUR CONTENT, they will.

You don't have to take it lying down though.

You need to actively patrol for copyright infringement.

Do searches related to your video.

    Set up a Google Alerts.

Get that DMCA takedown notice ready.

Also, make sure you're ready to prove you're the actual rights owner.

Not much you can do IMO. The people stealing your video won't buy anyway, so I think it's not really worth your time tracking them all down.

The best that you can do is put it inside a membership area so at least they'll need to download it first and upload somewhere else before they can steal your videos.

Technology wise, no. Someone will always be able to copy, unfortunlety this is a way of business.

You've already taken a lot of steps to protect your content - an extra one you might want to take is watermarking your videos. However, as has been stated above, if someone wants to steal your content, they will. You just have to make it difficult to do, so it's not really worth their while. I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. It doesn't happen as often as people think. You're more likely to have someone make their own "knock-off" version of your content than steal the actual videos.
