This article should help clarify: How to Use Nofollow Tags and Why You Need Them

It may be a little dated though as SEO is always changing.

The above link pretty much describes it in a nutshell, other than to point out that all websites have a healthy mix of follow and no-follow links to them. So don't stress over only building follow links; Google expects to see both.

I agree with kk075. You need a mixture of both "nofollow" and "dofollow" backlinks. Here is a great post on the subject:

This question belongs in the SEO forum.

OP there is no such thing as 'do follow'
A link is either has the rel=no follow tag or it doesn't.

No follow links are useless for ranking web pages, so don't waste your time on them.
However no-follow links can be good for siphoning traffic from other sites.

It's very likely that most sites will get some no-follow links naturally anyway because of where content is posted, but these won't hurt, just don't go chasing them.

There are some nofollow links on high profile websites. It's not bad to have them there because 1) It looks natural to the Google bot and 2) Actual people can see the link and visit your site anyway. Then, they might become loyal visitors to your site and/or link back.

Well, it is a good question: what is the difference between the "Do-follow" & "No-follow".

The "do-follow" increase your site traffic & page Rank at the same time, while the "No-follow" increase your site manual traffic only. This is the main difference between these two. Thanks

  • Its very simple. Do follow links are crawl by the search engines and no follow links do not crawl by the search engines. In SEO we have to build do follow links so that the SERP of our webiste will improve.
