Hi;
Just want to share, thing that just happen few minutes ago.
I went to my Godaddy account.
Purchased a new domain, and just thinking to to check my domains.
I have almost 200 domains in this account.

I remember, last time, I only had few domains, that set to be Auto Renew.
Less than 10.
And today, all my domain, is set to be Auto Renew.

Check yours now.

  • I remember people complaining about this a few years ago, so it looks like this strategy works well in GoDaddy's favor.

I used to have 200+ domains with GoDaddy, but since they no longer offer renewal coupons I moved most of them away.

Go daddy has been a pita for as long as I can remember. I only have two sites remaining on GoDaddy and they wouldn't still be there if GD wasn't doing something funky with the transfer codes. I have requested them several times to no avail and haven't had time to call to find out what's going on. One of many reasons I advise people to register their domains elsewhere.

Do you have another registrar that you could recommend?

I left GD behind long ago. I don't understand why anyone still uses them.

I can count on 1 hand the number of outages I've had in the last decade and their support is top notch to deal with.

I've never had any domains "switched" to auto renew in the 10+ years I've been with them.

I just don't see the issue with GoDaddy. Never have.

I've been into IM for the last few months, and it seems like there's a lot of debates when it comes to hosting companies.

I'm using the GoDaddy/Hostgator combo, and so far, I've been happy.

Count me as another happy GoDaddy customer. I have used them for many years on a number of personal and customer blogs. Their customer support is top rate in my book. I have my domains set on manual renewal and have never had them reset mine to auto renew. Not sure why or how that happened for you. With 200 domain names if I was you I would be calling them and screaming loud and clear.

I don't use GoDaddy, but this tactic isn't exclusive to them - many registrars will "reset" your renewal arrangements, often without notice. If you manage several hundred domains, this might actually be a help if you've ever accidentally missed a renewal deadline.

Otherwise, try deleting any payment details in your registrar account profile.

I did exactly that a few weeks ago. They not only set everything to Auto-Renew but also for a 2Yr Renewal at that! Looks like whenever they need more cash, they set renewals to multiple years.

Just for that, I'm shaving some domains away from GD and everyone should indeed watch their accounts. Everything else is easy to manage in their Domain UI EXCEPT for the Auto-Renew and # of years setting which they leave in the checkout area for THEIR convenience no doubt.

I think that you have to read everything as you going through the purchase process with GoDaddy. Seems like that is where I forget to watch for auto-renewal.

You can keep a list of all your domains and expiration dates in a spreadsheet and use the MIN Excel function to display next expiration date. I've never missed an expiration (don't have anywhere near 200 domains though). I still have auto renewal on as insurance on the important ones though.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised by GoDaddy doing that, given their sneaky tactics in virtually all interactions with customers. But I haven't noticed. And like some posters above, I have also moved some of my domains to other registrars after GD stopped the renewal coupons.

              Namecheap all the way.

I just checked my account and all my domains were set to auto-renew for 2 years. That definitely wasn't the option i selected a month ago.

They can keep all my expired and closed credit cards on file for all i care now.

Well Raja, you were right! All my domains are set back to auto renew after I specifically did not want to auto renew them.

I'm currently leaving them and transferring my domains and business to namecheap as we speak. I advice all other warriors do the same.

I noticed the same thing in my account as well, but I just
manually changed them back to how I wanted them.

Besides this I've never had a problem with them.

This is not only a problem with Godaddy, i recently saw my domains at register.com set to autorenew and the other day my credit card was charged with a re-bill even though i had not
    authorized it

I've never had this happen. In the past I've gone through challenges changing new domains away from auto renew. I've also had them email, call and send tons of mail for a few domains to try to get me to renew them, but never had this happen.

Keep in mind I've never had more than five domains with them at a time, I normally transfer them to another domain provider.

For Go Daddy, check into your account every month and see if there are changes to your account or memos on policy change that you may have not read in a sent email.

When renewing domains, mention that you saw a coupon for 40% off. They will say that the coupon was for new domains and not renewals. Tell them that with all the offers you have been receiving from other companies, GD's renewal price seems substantial, then pause...be quiet ...and let the customer service/sales person on the phone speak. If they don't make you an offer, ask for one by stating, "Well, with no discount, I am going to have to think about renewing with you guys and consider other offers. Do you have any discount you can give me?"

The sales force at GD is given some lead-way on pricing in order to retain current customers who are a threat to take their business elsewhere. I have always gotten a nice price reduction when I do this. You need to be renewing over 20 domains at a time to get the price reduction.
