    Hi Fred,

What do you like to do?

What are some things you could have an almost endless conversation about?

What do you tell other people about (something you wish others would enjoy as much as you)?

Have you ever had anyone say you were too much into something?

What gets you excited? In a good way? In a bad way?

    What are you good at?

What do other people say you're good at?

Those questions should keep you hoinh for a while. Write down ANYTHING that comes to mind. Write fast. Now is not the time to edit anything - not even spelling and grammar - just write!

    Ok...3...2...1...GO!

    All the best,
    Michael

      Michael,

Thank you very much for your input! One of the things that I really enjoy is computer marketing and learning more of it. But I have heard that this is too much of an over population of a niche to even try. Is this correct?

      Thanks,

It may be a competitive niche, but it's not impossible.

If you really enjoy it, then go for it!

When you're talking about the Internet the words 'over population' don't exist. The Internet is big...like...really big LOL. All kidding aside, there is a good reason why internet marketing seems like an over populated niche. It's because it is one of the easier areas to focus on and because people see results in this area. If you have an interest in a certain area you can't go wrong with picking that as your niche, so if the IM niche interests you then you should go for it!

I say go for it as well.. But you may need to find a niche within this niche or a "sub-niche" and go with that.

Don't try to do all of it at once. In my opinion you should find the sub niche that suits you the best and try to dominate that market. Stay focused on that one thing or you will get side tracked and you could end up at a loss in that niche.

    Good Luck,
    Video Guy

IM is a competive market with a lot of gurus (Garbage U Rarely USe)
Yes- I came up w/ that acronymn. What you could do is offer a relatively inexpensive product or membership site, gear it for IM beginners, and your hook could be something like let's take this journey together- buy affiliate products, use em- review em and if they are good, recommend them to your list-

    good luck-

How are we supposed to know what you are interested in? What really gets you going? What could you talk about for an hour easily? For me it was parenting. I can talk all day about my children and what they are doing.
The easier it is for you to talk about your niche, the easier the articles will come for you. Make a list of all the things you are pretty excited about. Then pick one or two that you are most keen on or think you are mots knowledgeable on. And start your research from there. good luck

I picked mine due to content sites I write for. I was able to see which articles got the most views. But then I got carried away and started sites for all of them! Now I am coming up for air....and focusing on two sites in the same niche.

Pick one and really focus on it.

When I'm picking a niche, I usually choose something I'm interested in learning more about.

For example, my brother and I are thinking about learning Chinese. I started some non-IM research about learning Chinese and I came up with questions that I really wanted to know myself. Later, I made a website with those exact same questions and some other popular long-tail keyword questions. Turns out a lot people had the same questions as me.

So basically, whatever you want to learn about, research it. Write about what you just learned and answer the questions that you have for yourself. I'm learning how to speak Chinese AND I'm making money by directing other people who want to learn to speak Chinese.

      It's sorta a win-win situation, right?

You may also ask yourself, "What advice do people come to me for the most?" They probably do because you know how to articulate your opinions and people see you as someone to follow. Write your material that way. Like you are sitting across the table with a friend that asked you for help on ___________.

    Use that.

    Fred,

What's your field of interest that you love? That, you've to ask yourself. Nobody can give you the exact answer.

IMHO, one of the many ways to see results faster in terms of dollar and cents is to offer a service. If I were you and I'm a beginner, I'd sell my service that other people want. However, you may get bored if you've problems delivering your offer. I think that's the risk of service based business. You've to figure out what's best for you.

There are like a million ways to get niche ideas. Yeah yeah it's always great to have a niche that you love etc. etc. Sometimes though these niches are not always profitable and when you aren't making money from them you are very likely to lose focus. Go for something evergreen e.g. weight loss, making money online, teeth whitening etc. and then go after sub niches e.g. making money online -> paid survey sites for women who live at home alone with only 2 cats for company.

Hope you understand. I normally just look through my CPA network site and see what is converting well and then research that. Anyways friend best of luck!

Chris Surfrider once wrote, and I'm paraphrasing, that the advice "do what you love" have been the beginning of most IM failures.

Sure, it is great to do what you love, particularly if you are running your own business, but it isn't a magic formula for success. I can think of a handful of little specialty shops that have opened up in my town a year ago that now have "for lease" signs hung in an empty shop window.

If you are looking for money, and you are good at research, why not write about something that sells or is popular then? Guarantee your success by playing the numbers. It isn't a magic bullet either, especially if there is a lot of competition.

I've done well with the sub-niche sites and I'm happy in that area. Why? Because I can set it and forget it. I write what I like. I do keyword research using the Google AdWords external keyword tool to guarantee I hit what others are searching for. Write some articles, put up AdSense and walk away. Provided there isn't someone actively trying to push you out of the rankings then it isn't a bad model, but the money is limited so do it again.

The other model requires more work obviously so it is dependent on your personality type. Keyword research, competition analysis, find out if there are advertisers spending money in that niche, link building, spending money on the bid directories, press releases, article marketing, etc. If you are going to that much trouble, in my opinion anyway, you should make sure you are in an area that is going to pay you back for your trouble. Lot's of people searching, little competition or competition that is easy to knock out, and advertisers or merchants spending money in that area. And if you can make it something you are interested in learning about or already know about, then you've hit the jackpot.

But how do you find that niche? That's a tough question for me to answer because I struggle with it to. I'd start with something I'm interested in, say "sewing", and go to Google AdWords external keyword tool, check the "synonyms" box and see what it returns. Pick your favorites, punch then in the box and try again. That should at least get the juices flowing. Pay attention to the number of people searching, the number of advertisers, average cost per click, and any other numbers that may indicate if there is money to be found in that area.

Here's some URLs I use to help come up with ideas.

Simple advice I would suggest is for you to attack a market where the buyers are absolutely desperate for the product you're offering. Desperation is key. It ensures your target is absolutely willing to buy. I have been selling to desperate buyers successfully for the past 4 months. I capitalize on a health issue I was plagued with, but found the cure to.

I got this idea from the e-book "desperate buyers only" (google it). Desperate buyers buy - while you have to work harder to convince customers who aren't desperate.

In my mind, this is where the EASY money is...

Exactly. The real world rarely awards a person who does what he/she loves especially when he/she has empty pocket
Exactly. And desperate buyers are as close to a sure thing as you can get. Services, software and online tools that automate a process are also great.

SBI and Ken Evoy were my first introduction to the "do what you love" mindset and it killed my IM efforts for a couple years. Many others complained about getting no traffic even though they did the keyword research.

An an example, I know a guy who has about 20 sites that he started using the "do what you love" pattern. Only 2 are successful. The thing is, with no promotion apart from link building it took about 4 years to get them into the #1 positions. They are successful make no mistake about it. But after 4 years people change, and what was interesting to write about then is no longer fun because it has become a job that you must do or lose your rankings. As a result, the fellow pays professionals in the field to write articles for his sites.

So you must keep those things in mind. Do what you love is no gaurantee of overnight success. It takes time to build most kinds of sites into a success. What you love today you may hate next year.

Market research should be a prerequisite to Internet Marketing.

Find a market first that spends money, then find out what they want and give it to them.

    Answer is "Research"

You need to brainstorm for ideas !
Have several broader ideas for research .

Here is a step-by-step procedure that i follow which help me look deeper and finally helps me decide even before i think of creating a product.

    Looking for ideas :
    1.Google Trends
    2.Lycos Top 50
    3.yahoo buzz
    4.eBay Pulse
5.Twitter is also a good place to get some off beat ideas

Make a note of hot topics and look further for more targeted sub-niche.

Amazon.com can help you find the potential of a given sub-niche.

Once you have couple of potential sub-niche, use keyword tools like Google's keyword tool and yahoo overture to find out the how many times the keywords or related keywords were searched for .

Any further you wanna know than this, there are handful of threads out here which can guide you ! Hope this would help you and get some new ideas.

    Cheers

      Hey Fred,
Choosing something you are passionate about is extremely important, but it can't be everything. After all, if you were extremely passionate about watching grass grow and decided to make a site about it, you probably wouldn't get very far.

      Why?

It would be hard to grow an audience, because (I'm hoping ) not a lot of people would share the same interest. This means that nobody would be searching for your theme and nobody would care if they did stumble upon your site.

On the contrary, you don't want a niche that is too broad. You'll never be able to get through the competition. Finding the right balance is key.

As for what to choose, this should hopefully stir up some of your creative juices. How about a site that's related to...

      Advertising
      Aerospace
      Agriculture/farming
      Antiques and collectibles
      Apparel/clothing/fashion
      Architecture/buildings
      Arts & Crafts
      Auctions
      Automotive
      Aviation
      Beverages
      Books
      Chemicals
      Children/parenting
      Cleaning
      Communications/media
      Computers
      Construction
      Consulting
      Conventions/Trade Shows
      Design
      Disabilities
      Education
      Electronics
      Employment
      Energy
      Engineering
      Entertainment
      Financial services
      Food
      Gambling
      Games
      Government
      Health
      Hobbies
      Home/garden/flowers/plants
      Hospitality/entertaining
      Information
      Jewelry
      Law
      Manufacturing
      Minerals
      Music
      New age
      Office supplies
      Publishing
      Real Estate
      Religion/Spirituality
      Research and Development
      Retail management
      Science
      Security
      Sex
      Software
      Sports
      Telecommunications
      Toys
      Trade
      Transportation
      Travel
      Video
      Weather

These are broad categories. Find one that interests you and think of a unique spin you can put on it. For example, you like sports, but it's pretty hard competing with ESPN. In particular, you like Golf. How about creating a site for people trying to break 80 (I know I would like to shave a few strokes off my 8 handicap). Or perhaps you want to build a site purely on putting.

The key is to choose a niche that meets the broad/narrow category just right. When all is said and done, your site should be the BEST website on the Internet about your particular topic. If anybody want to learn more about "blank" then they would absolutely HAVE to check out your site first.

When you get it down to 2-3 possibilities, do a Google search for "choose it" . It's a neat little tool that can help you weigh out your options and help you select which one would make the best fit.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Pick any huge market - preferably one that interests you - and find the problems of that market. Sometimes you can be a part of your market too. Understand your market and how they think. Think like the customer (might be easy if you are in this market). What are they really looking for? Now find a solution and give it to them.

Oh and DON'T OVERTHINK! Just Do.
