You can get simple, no-frills webhosting for as little as $9.99 per month.

Don't use HostGator, Bluehost, or 1on1. I'd stay away from GoDaddy, as well.

Also, never register your domain with the same company you host with.

Google AdWords has a free keyword search tool.

  If you have your domain registered with the company you host that website on, they can lock out both your domain (from being transferred) and your hosting (so you have no website) in the event they get any complaints (the most common being spam).
  
  Note that you don't have to have actually been guilty of spamming to get a complaint of spam; it can (and does) happen regularly. People tend to complain when they feel slighted, and sometimes complain about something they know is likely to engender action as opposed to whatever they're actually upset about.
  
  If your host shuts down your website for any reason, you can have your domain hosted elsewhere fairly quickly, and be up and running in almost no time -- UNLESS your domain registrar is also your hosting company; in that case, they can lock out your domain and you will be unable to host it anywhere.

You can find quality hosts for half of that. Stablehost, for example, is in the $5 range.

Excellent advice. Avoid the fake "top 10" lists. Learn to recognize them as the fakes they are.

Don't use a host for registering a domain, period. Use an accredited registrar, such as Namecheap.

If you're really short on cash, you could have your own domain with free hosting for under 10$. Just find a good coupon code (there are tons of them online) and register with Namecheap if possible, Godaddy being the second choice. For free hosting, go to 000webhost.com they offer great banner free free hosting up to 5 domains. Then you can graduate to paid hosting once you have the money.

Just like anything else in life. You get what you pay for. I suggest you do a search for domain and hosting companies to get an idea of what they charge. Then decide how long you wish to keep you domain. Its always cheaper to buy for longer periods of time. If your just curious and not real serious about this as a business don't waste your money.

1and1.com almost always has domains for $1 the first year.

Hostgator has plans which are $9.99 a month. I've never had any problems with them.

I have logged into google keywords, but I am a little unsure what I need to be doing. There are some most common phrases and lots of stats. Do I need to try and get these into my domain name or website pages? I presume its best to use the words with the most searches but lowest competition?

Michael, why not Hostgator?

Clearly, I'm not Michael...but...telling people to stay away from EIG companies is common here.

Hostgator was purchased by EIG a year or more agao and many people seem to have had problems with HG since that time.

That said, there are few hosts that have as much detailed "how to" information for newbies as Hostgator does.

I've had HG reseller accounts for many years now - and my service has not had problems since the buyout. I don't know why that is but every time someone has post "HG is down" - my sites are not down.

Hosting is hosting - the cheapest or those that promise "endless space" are ones to avoid to my mind. If you are just starting out with first hosting and first domain...you don't have to do hours of research. You need a site with a lot of help and information so go with one of the larger hosting companies to begin with. HG would work for that.

The chances of a large hosting company "locking your domain" is extremely slight. IN the past there have been times (and I've personally seen it happen) when a smaller host had server crashes that took down all sites hosted there. If you also had your domain placed there - they could (and did) charge you to move that domain even though they (the host) were the problem.

Some things are simply smart practices - the separation of domain and hosting is one of those. However, should you find hosting offering a FREE domain and you are brand new online....might be worth it to get your feet wet.

I never had issues with HostGator and I been using them many years and still do. I register domains with GoDaddy or Namecheap (using coupon codes) and then host them at either HG or Hostnine.com.

I am very new to this and will need something simple and easy to use.

I will not be setting the world alight in terms of page views.

Does Hosgator seem reasonable for this? of course I will be using an accredited registrar to get a domain name registered.

I guess worst case scenario if I really take to web design and want to really crank it up and experience problems I could always leave HG. Its only going to cost me about £38 for a years hosting.

You could try Arvixe for around $7 a month you get hosting and also comes with a free domain, and you could look for coupon codes on google to try get it even cheaper

The Domain name's rate may differ from extension to extension. Such as the .com & .info domain's rate is too different. Here I would like to suggest you to see the Godaddy & namecheap. These two sites are good, you can compare the rate. Then you can buy from any sites, as you wish. In these site you will see most of the site support the PAYPAL, you can pay them via paypal. Beside the paypal, you can use the VISA/ Master card/ American express or something like these. Thanks a lot.

You can buy your domain name from godaddy or namecheap. Just google for discount coupons every time you purchase a domain if you want to pay lesser.

I have been buying my domains from both before and they are both fine. Now, I concentrated with namecheap for domain name registrations.

I am also using hostgator as my host. It is working great!

you can get a .com domain in less than $10 in namecheap. theres a coupon code, dont forget to search and use that..currently its windydomain i guess. for hosting i like A2hosting. i hav had no problem at all with them and there customer care is pretty good. they reply to your queries timely and solves your issues with patience. For first year you get around 50% discount which comes to around less than $50 if you need to host only one domain. u hav option of histin multiple add on domains by upgradin yourself as well if u want. one tip...if you are buyin domain and hostin, do not forget to create your own email id using your domain name. it looks professional which helps in impression and it doesnt cost extra. wish u luck.

For registering new domains, I prefer namecheap. They have decent prices.
And as far as hosting goes, be sure to opt for the smallest plan the hosting company has to offer. If your website is new, and if you are also new to this, you won't need a whole lot of resources to start out.

I'm using NameCheap for my domains (cheapest I've come across plus you can sometimes find coupon codes online)

For hosting I'm using Hostgator (I have had zero dowtime since early last year and then it was only down for a few days so not bad imho)
