Should you lock your content to get shares?

Hey everybody. Been a while since I've wrote on here but I have been checking on different topics every few days. I spent a little while tonight working on my website and added a Facebook popup on my website but I really wanted to get Twitter and Google Plus on there as well. I did some research and figured out the best way to do this, would be to lock your content until they share it on one of the three sites. I was just wondering if anybody else has tried this method and what kind of luck did they have? I've already had more visitors in the last couple hours than I have in a few days and just wanted to share this with everybody and see what they thought about this idea. Thanks alot

    It can work well in "desperate" markets.

    There are 2 effects in play here:

    1. You enhance the perceived value of your information.
    2. You of course encourage a viral response.

    This is really all about viral marketing. If you're new to the subject, or relatively new I should say, then social locking can be a simple means to set-off the viral response. To the experienced viral marketer, though, who knows how to do so without social locking, you'll have better results without; reason being, a proportion of your incoming traffic, that would have shared your content anyway, will be put off by the locker, for numerous reasons.

    What I'd suggest is this:

    1. Practice locking up "key information," not entire websites, unless of course those websites contain only that key information.

    2. Delve deeper into viral marketing and split test to discover if you can do better at that point without social locking.

    Thanks for letting me know and I just got done adding another article a few minutes ago. I kind of like having it locked as I usually spend a couple hours writing my articles and the least they can do is share it for me if they want to read it. Think I'll keep it like that from now on as I've already had the most visitors I've had in a while. Hopefully this will also help boost my rankings in the search engines and get me even more new readers as well. Going "viral" would be a great bonus
