Hands Up Who Wants To Know About Twitter.

Hi Warriors,

I was until recently very naively thinking that because Twitter was pretty simple (I'm a techy at heart so I forget that this warps my perspective a little) and so anyone thinking of using it would just need to take a quick look and then think about if it fits with their marketing mix or not.

I've been told repeatedly now that no matter how simple something is to use, the context within which it is used makes almost anything open to massive interpretation - which I completely agree with.

So, upon reflection I'm thinking that since I've been making good money from using Twitter as part of my marketing efforts and that there are definite right and wrong things to do with Twitter, perhaps it might be worth spending some time to share what's worked and not worked for me on Twitter.

Of course, I could do the normal thing and just write something and then run a WSO to offer it to you, but I'm more interested in whether you actually need/want this information and what specifically you would like to know.

I'm not from the school of tell you how to do it. I'm more interested in putting my own perspective into the context of what you want/need.

So - here's your chance. Just post a reply with what you want to know and I'll include an answer in my product and anyone who posts a request here will get a free copy.

If you don't know what you want or need and would rather just wait until I've done it and buy it - that's fine, but it's much more important to me that you get what you need, so I'm happy to give those who respond a free copy.

I've also included a quick poll just to gauge the interest level too.

I would like to know how many people you can follow a day without getting banned, or would that get you banned. Also can you send the same direct message to 1000 people to launch a product or would that get you banned also. Seems a lot of sites these days want to ban you for life for the smallest thing.

Can you answer these two basic questions now?

    Hi Mike,

Twitter actually tell you about this stuff already.

Here's a link to their advice on follow limits: Twitter Support :: I can't follow people: follow limits

A quick summary of limitations is:

    1,000 updates per day
    250 direct messages per day
    150 API requests per hour
    Follow limit

This is also why if you intend to use any Twitter tools - they need to operate within these guidelines. My own tool was built around these from the beginning so it's impossible for me to go outside them by accident. It's the reason I recently offered a WSO for getting people followers safely.

    Andy

        No worries Mike,

This is one of those classic examples I'm referring to where it's just basic information which Twitter already provides but which people feel there is mystery around. There are people who have an interest in trying to make this stuff sound mysterious (or even not want you to know), and I would normally assume that anyone with a vague interest in Twitter would have just looked this up on Twitter - but I know better now

        Hi Andy

I would love to know more about creating an income from Twitter. I know that one should brand themselves, so I know in ordery to do that I would need more accounts.

However, it's finding and converting the followers to buyers that i'd like to know?

I don't think that too much information is a bad thing.

        Thanks in advance

I don't know, I'm no Twitter expert, but this is what I have found works
          very well for me.

          1. Look up who the most influential people are in your niche. See if they
          have Twitter accounts.

          2. Follow just those people. Over time, those who do the "let's follow
everybody who follows so and so" will follow you. I get about 10 new followers
          a day.

          3. Make 90% of your tweets about sharing information or just letting people
get to know you. Personally, I provide links to my articles so people can
read them. I do this about once or twice a day.

          4. The other 10% of my tweets I'll offer some kind of a deal on one of
my products only to my Twitter followers. Make them feel special. I even
put up a Twitter blog that I only offer to them.

          5. Give more than you take. Show your followers that you care about
          helping them.

As a result of these tactics, my blog readership has exploded. I am
getting 10 to 20 times as many daily viewers as I got before I started
          using Twitter.

I do not use any automated software. The only thing I do is autofollow
people who follow me. I don't use the auto DM feature.

That's it. I keep it simple. It doesn't have to be complicated.

It's like with anything else regarding a social site, like a forum. The more
you give, the more you get in return.

Does that about sum it up Andy?

I think that one line does.

There are obviously a lot of ways to look at Twitter and a lot of uses for it, so I can understand that people may not be clear about how it can help them achieve certain objectives.

Making money is the classic - you can do it many ways and even on Twitter there are many revenue models.

I personally don't focus any of my activities solely on making money, so I'm not a 'normal' IMer, but I've made money in at least 5 ways using Twitter so I know that it's not as simple as just one strategy fits all. (as usual)

Thanks for the input so far.

I do have one more question now:

Would you prefer a text based product or video?

              Andy

Andy, because of the many people still on dial up who have trouble
downloading videos, my guess is that you're going to get a split on
this answer just for that one reason alone. Some people also simply
don't like having to wade through a whole video and prefer to just be
able to skip to the parts that they need.

Others will really love to see the process visually (personally I think in
some cases, video is almost a must have)

So IMO, you might want to make it text and video.

Good subject and people sure need the help with Twitter.

The API request limit per hour is actually not that straight forward. You can actually gain API rate for performing tasks which is why its best to use Twitter applications that do everything and try and maintain a healthy balance.

The daily limit to adding follows is now 500 down from 1000.

If you use an application that requires you to hand over your username and password you are crazy. It is not necessary any more and there have been numerous occassions where sites have been using peoples understandable naivity to take over their twitter accounts.

Don't want to help you write your new product too much but that information should be helpful to everyone

    Hey Andy...

    Great idea.. altruistic too..

Personally, I'm not in the need for such advice.. but I think the ideal target demographic for this kind of info, is small business owners who aren't connected/exposed to social media like we (internet marketing folks) are on a daily basis.

Maybe our community has a section of people in this demographic, maybe not.. but I'm sure this poll/thread will get them out if we do.. so great stuff!.

Or I could be completely wrong.. it did happen once, I think.

Peace to ya.. and have a great weekend, dude.

    Hi Andy,

This sounds great. I do have a few questions if I may:

1 - What exactly was Twitter designed to achieve, and has it evolved since?
2 - Are people now using it differently to the above, and if so, for what benefit?
3 - Are people abusing the system? If so, how and to what effect?
4 - Is there an agreed Twitter etiquette I should be aware of?
5 - Regarding Twitter 'tools' - what types are there, what can they do and how crucial can they be to a would-be Twitter marketer?

Thanks for the opportunity to ask

I voted no, but only because there is soo much info out there on Twitter already. I use Twitter sparingly. I think it works best for those more well known marketers that can get 1000's of followers, yet follow hardly no one back. Think Ed Dale.

Ed thinks Twitter is the best thing since sliced bread, but really better relationships are built on forums like this and on Facebook. One you get fairly known, people like you, etc then twitter I would guess starts to shine. Perry Marshall is the master of this (at least his new product leads you to believe so)

Andy- great market research idea. Anyone who responds to this thread gets a free copy...good incentive for people to tell you what they want. Hadn't thought of doing that.

My questions: How do I use twitter to build my list, build traffic to my blog, and sell my products? Why do some tweets get retweeted and how do we replicate this?

      Hi Andy,

My question only has to do with the most effective way to tweet and what should be in there as related to business. I have seen many different people on the site and still don't understand some of the stuff they write about and how they are able to drive traffic their way.

I also think that a video and a pdf would be great. I have used videos in a stop/go fashion to learn what I need to do in the past.

      Thanks for bringing this up.

      Hi Andy,

I've got a question. When I follow someone with a large "follows" base, when I try to dig down to the first people they followed, I can never get to the beginning of follow list.

ex: Twitter: What are you doing?TwitterName/following?page=1000

Say this person is following 20000 and you divide that number by 20 (number of default following per page) you'd get 1000 pages. But Twitter will not show you those results. Usually just a blank page showing the number of people being followed.

The reason I'm interested in getting to the first people being followed is that they are usually the closest people to the that person. (Friends and Confidants) and rich sources of knowledge.

Do you know an easy way to get to the first people being followed?

      Thanks,

      Hi Christine,

I learned about this listening to Perry Belcher...

He likes to use Twitter Search to search for terms such as "Live in Austin" or "Live in NYC"...

You get the idea, I'm sure. If you use localised search terms, you should hopefully come up with conversations between Twitter users who are in your target geographic location.

Even something as simple as location (ie. living in the same city) is a great way to connect online.

      Hope this helps...

    You're a genius!

I love the approach to polling the Warriors as to what they'd like to see in a Twitter product (or any other subject for that matter).

I like to use Twitter to find out from my followers what they'd like to see in a blog post etc and how I can be of use to them - perhaps you could add that approach to your product to help readers generate ideas for blog / video content?

    Thank you Andy,

I thought I put my comments in this thread a couple days ago, but then just found it sitting in notepad. AAAaarrrrghhhhh. Can I get a new brain?

I signed up a Twitter a couple weeks ago, made a few tweets and next thing I know I have dozens of request from people or robots wanting to follow me or have me follow them or I have no idea what they want.

I have no idea what I am doing either, but that has never stopped me in the past.

I listened to the webinar/sales-pitch by Perry Belcher the other night and can't figure how to "qualify" those who would follow me. Perry is in the IM niche, and maybe anyone on twitter might be interested in buying from that niche.

I'm in another niche (one in which I perceive few people use twitter) and my question is does it really do any good to build a large following that may not have any interest in your niche? How would you sell to them/ Is there a way to attract people from a particular niche?

    thanks
