Limiting traffic source to specific country. Good idea?

Hello friends;

When I just started testing conversion rates (from opt to profit-max), is it a good idea to limit the Bing search (or any other source) to a specific country?

I was just about to limit my Bing campaign to USA and I see there is a sale from South Africa.

What would you recommend?

Thank you

For me it would depend on the intended audience and product. Say your product is about dog walking and written in English. Pick those countries where there are 1. Dog owners 2. English is native language or at least taught to a decent conversation standard.

I would advise you go more targeted depending on niche and focus in on particular breeds of dog or areas.

For example: how to walk a labrador or dog walking in New York parks.

If you can focus in on a target audience like that then you will get a more responsive audience to your offer.

So the target could be age 20 to 80, interests: dogs, location: new York.

With some tweaks to any product you cam make it more targeted.

    Hope this helps.

    Luke

P.S the dog walking niche is hypothetical

      BlueHulk,

Test and track results. Limit your marketing to your "perfect" audience. Start out on a small scale and test by targeting different variables (like age, gender, country, income, etc). Once you have found the best combination of winning variables, then you can ramp up knowing that you are getting the best ROI you can.

Thank you for your reply. You narrowed it down nicely. This product that I am speaking about is very gender specific but not location specific. It is relationship and dating niche (for men). To be exact it is a "Get your Ex Girlfriend Back". Do you mind showing how you would narrow that down?

      Thank you

    Target Tier 1 countries.

USA, UK, Canada and Australia are best. Reason: English speaking and disposable income to buy.

It really depends on audience traffic. If audience knows English who are in South africa in a good amount then there wont be any issue.

I wouldn't limit it, you saw for yourself you got a sale from where you probably least expected it.
Of course, it depends on what you're selling, if it is a product that makes shipping way too complicated then you could consider limiting your target audience to your own area, but if you don't have such problems, then think about it this way: profit is still profit no matter where it comes from.

Tier 1 countries. US, UK, Australia, Canada.

Mainly English speaking countries where you know they spend money and more than likely speak English.

It's going to cost more of course than any other of the Tiers, but you are more than likely going to get better traffic and make more money in the long run.

Depends on your product. Looking at some of my South American customers, many of them are US MBA's. Should I tell my campaigns to block them?

If you're paying for ad's....yes, limit it....but over the longer term, there's more sales internationally than most American's expect.

Read our most recent articles on wine, this month it's that unappreciated region called Napa Valley.

I usually limit my campaigns to primarily the USA/Canada/UK/Australia Why do I do that? Simply because that is where the vast majority of my buyers are from. These people are more likely to have credit cards necessary to conduct business transactions as well.

The fact that you got a sale from South Africa however, in that case I would make an exemption to the rule. You can focus your campaigns heavily toward your top producing areas of the world, and less so on minor ones.

Set up different campaigns for each, targeted to specific regions.

With PPC, the more finely targeted you can make your campaigns the better.

I think the whole idea of using geographic limits on your pay per click marketing campaign is generally a good idea.

You have to understand that traffic from other countries may not convert well with your offer.

While you may get an occasional conversion here and there, if you look at the big numbers, you probably will be losing out as far as return on investment is concerned.

With pay per click marketing, it is very easy to lose your shirt.

You have to watch every cent you spend.

I would suggest targeting lesser value keywords from countries like the United States or Canada and then shepherding that traffic through the know-like-trust buying cycle.

You probably would make more money recycling otherwise low-value keywords and turning them into conversions rather than taking your chances with a lower budget that caters to international traffic.

You can add New Zealand to the list for top 5 countries. Something like 96% of them speak english.
