IM Graphics, Ads & eCovers Question

Hey everyone!

Coming from a graphics background I'm looking to create a product within that scope but want to make sure I start down a path that would actually lead to creating value for people and improving their business. To that end I have some questions that would be amazing to get some feedback on please. Apologies if this is a long list or there's a better way/place to ask these, this is my very first post. Thanks so much, guys!
  1. Do you typically make DIY graphics or outsource?
  2. If you make your own graphics how do you make them?
  3. If you outsource how do you typically go about that?
  4. Do you feel you have a good handle on making your own graphics and/or getting what you asked for from a designer?
  5. Is there a particular type of graphic you find challenging to create for yourself or commission for?
  6. How valuable would you find it to have someone show you how to utilize design best practices/basics and visual selling techniques in your own designs?
  7. Would you find it useful to have that same information to check commissioned designs against to ensure what you're paying for is worth the price?

  • Do you typically make DIY graphics or outsource?
Both, depending on the scope of the project.

I have a really great graphics guy who I've worked with for years.
I also in my career have learned Photoshop myself, and have all the other tools such as action scripts in order to easily create beyond professional cover images myself.

If you make your own graphics how do you make them?
Photoshop combined with legally licensed images if required.
If using images, they are purchased for legitimate and trusted sources.
Fotolia is one source that I've worked closely with for years.
From the marketers here I like to make sure that they are selling legit stuff.
I see allot of WSO's etc selling rehashed PLR graphics as "brand new".

If you outsource how do you typically go about that?
I explain my vision very clearly and in detail, and at times I send a draft that I create myself. I then expect to be able to go back and forth if need be until I am happy.

Note: I ALWAYS need the PSD files to everything.
If I can't get those, then the deal is off.

Do you feel you have a good handle on making your own graphics and/or getting what you asked for from a designer?
    Yes.

Is there a particular type of graphic you find challenging to create for yourself or commission for?
    Not really.

How valuable would you find it to have someone show you how to utilize design best practices/basics and visual selling techniques in your own designs?
I think that every "someone" has their own opinions and ways of doing things.
Not sure if there are universal best practices or written in stone visual selling techniques. I guess it all depends on who's book you read. I don't like people who teach "their way" is "the way".
Especially when it comes to art, graphics, use of colors, layouts, techniques etc...

Would you find it useful to have that same information to check commissioned designs against to ensure what you're paying for is worth the price?
If you design a visually compelling sales page, with great sales copy, then I'm sure you can convince some people to buy your service. Because ultimately It's all about the sales copy and graphics, isn't it?

I guess what you are saying is that your standards, techniques, and pricing are "the way", and commissioned designs should be checked against your checklist?

In the end, sometimes it's not about just the price for the graphic that you get.
    There's more to it.

I suck at creating graphics so i just hire people on Fiverr - or an IM designer from the web to do it for me. I like the results. These people are good. Hire one from Fiverr to see some of the good quality that they can provide for you.

if you try this like a business you need to hire people to help you, you cant do everything alone. I focus on sell more and more, and other people do the rest like graphics and something like that

I should mention too, that my initial thought wouldn't necessary involve selling services or suggesting pricing but rather helping folks in IM have a better understanding of how to either create more compelling graphics on their own if that's their preference (ecovers, ads, etc) or to help them get more out of their relationships with their freelancers. Appreciating the feedback!
