Hi

When you register a website, do you choose to pay to have your personal details hidden from the WHOIS directory?

Go daddy want to charge me £6 for this.

What do you think? Personally I like the idea, but didnt know it would cost me.

  • Only you can determine the value of your personal details not being listed.

This business model is basically "pay us or we will make your private info public".

Most legit businesses operating in public locations don't have an issue with having their business info listed.

Others including 1 man internet businesses working from home (with or without family and kids at home) who may not want their customers showing up at their door, usually pay to have a private listing. Same goes for scammers and spammers...

Nope. We don't pay for this and that's true even though our team is completely distributed and we don't have a central office. Instead we got a P.O. Box and a VOIP phone number that forwards to voicemail box and listed those.

We like transparency, and while we've had a very small amount of spam or marketing calls, I think it sends a message to our customers that we're not some shady operation. Moreover, we've even gotten a few calls or things sent to us (such as product samples, etc.) that we did want and might not have gotten otherwise.

As stoltingmediagroup said, it's really a personal decision and I can certainly see why some might choose to go the direction of hiding their info -- but that's at least why we don't.

Some of my domains I keep the WhoIs private, others paid for.

I prefer Namecheap as their protection service is free for the first year and a lot cheaper than GoDaddy in subsquent years. Transferring a domain to them is relatively simple.

This is a source of paranoia for many newbies, but there is almost never anything to worry about. When you're new nobody cares who you are. Then years down the road if you find success and people do care who you are, whois privacy isn't going to hide you.

  • If your running a small little business or solo marketing campaigns, then this probably isn't necessary..

If you run a bigger company, then this is helpful
