Pay for Website Design

I am currently learning C# and some other programs to eventually get to the point to making my own websites but while I am learning this I want to get a website up now.

I do not want a Wordpress site. I do not care for the way they look. I'd like to pay someone to design a site for me, would be music related and would have the ability to sell products on it as well.

Wasn't sure if Elance or Odesk would be the way to go or some online service that creates websites. I'd like something professionally done and not something that looks like I paid $5 for it.

Just looking for some advice on the best way to go about this?

May I ask why you're learning C# for creating websites? It's a challenging language if you're an inexperienced coder, and to top it off, it's not the most appropriate choice for web development.

If I were you, I'd turn my focus onto PHP, and you should know HTML and CSS before studying any kind of web development..

As for WordPress, anything you don't like about the appearance can be changed, just like a non-WordPress website. It's a great platform with a ton of support due to its popularity. Practically any design can be migrated to WordPress. It has that level of flexibility.

Elance and oDesk aren't bad choices for seeking out a designer, but you get what you pay for. Don't expect great results from a $10/hour designer (speaking from experience). Filter your searches to view people with strong portfolios, excellent ratings and acceptable prices.

    Best of luck!

I pretty much agree with everything Ashley said here.

C# is going to take you months or years to become decent at, and just going off of one friends advice seems shakey.

If it was me wanting to build a music site, I would get domain > hosting > install wordpress > buy premium theme > hire webdesigner on oDesk and customize my premium theme the way I want. You could have all of this done for $150 - $300 and have an actual finished website instead of some epic idea of a site that probably won't ever get built.

When you start making things overly complicated is when you'll end up never finishing a project.

      Keep it simple brotha!!!!

Well a friend who is a coder in C# but has never done a website told me i needed to learn C# to design a really good website because that is how they are done.

I am new to all this and have what i think are some awesome ideas. May not be but never know until I try and either way I will learn something and improve.

Back in the early days I created a crude HTML website but havent done much since then and I know basic coding. I would still consider myself a newbie though. I know i can learn what i need to but would like to get something up now while I learn how to do it myself.

So I dont need C#? I'll look into the others you posted but I'd still like to get a site up in the mean time.

well i did buy a theme i liked but couldn't figure out how to customize it the way i wanted it to look. ty for the advice.

The reason i wanted to stay away from word press is one for the look but two every site i checked out that had to do with music when i looked at the code no one was using word press. They were all customized sites.

Is it ok to build a business with WordPress or not? do you keep more traffic on your site if its not Wordpress? or does none of this really matter and its ok to use WordPress. i keep Googling and getting mixed opinions on the subject. One person I read said WordPress is just for beginners and eventually you will build out of that and onto a real website. If thats the case then lets just get a real website.

    So confusing....

You don't need C#. I doubt that many experienced web designers even knows C#.

Don't get hung up on the technical side of things. That's why most smart marketers who don't know html, css, javascript, etc., use WordPress. We get things set up quickly and start selling.

Just try it. Sign up for cheap hosting at HostGator, install WordPress easily with Fantastico or Softaculous (one or both is included free when you sign up with HostGator), and get in there and have a look at the free themes through the WordPress admin dashboard.

It's easy to learn how to start using WordPress.

Plus check out the themes at Magazine3 or StudioPress or Elegant Themes. All of these can be customized. Some of them include their own options panel, and StudioPress recently came out with a non-techie tool (sold separately) that you can use to customize pretty much everything in some of their themes with zero knowledge of css or anything else.

+1 for Wordpress if is going to be a simple website. C# will lead you down a .NET/ASP path which is powerful in the web application and mobile app development game (also locks you in to a compiling language and some steep learning to play in Microsoft's playground). I have .Net and php teams and depending on a clients requirements will recommend a framework most suitable for them.

My own website is a Wordpress site and while it still needs a fair bit of work, I don't think it looks like it cost $5. Worpress is a powerful CMS and makes building websites simple for people who do not know programming. I suggest that you start there, pay someone to tweak the theme you want (Mine started as an Avada theme an now has a number of custom tweaks including integration with other 3rd party apps) and be up and running.

Forget C#, your time is more valuable than that, focus on things that will grow your business, pay people to do the work. (Say it costs you $2000 for the site, which is huge - how much is the months of your time learning C# worth in your time?) If you (under) value yourself at $50/hour that's a week of your time for something with all the bells and whistles you could ever want!

Happy to discuss further with you via PM/;Skype if you want.

WordPress is so versatile and easy to use I don't understand why anyone ever uses anything else.

I do not want a Wordpress site. I do not care for the way they look.
All WP sites look the same? That's news to me as all of mine are distinctly different.

If you are serious about having a website then take a little time with the millions of WP tutorial videos that are everywhere. Any little problem you have just Google it, you will find a video tutorial explaining it.

Be very careful who you listen to, most of these people don't have a clue.

I was struggling with on one hand learning C# and putting all my ideas on hold for God knows how long or paying someone to build a site.

Just want to say thank you for all the tips and advice. I found a few themes in wordpress that i really like and will pay someone to tweak it for me and get this going. I know i still have a lot to learn, so thank you.

If you want to learn how o design a website, you are wasting your time with C#!
You need to learn the basics, meaning HTML, CSS and then PHP and maybe some Java Script.
However, once you learn the basics, I advice you to use Wordpress! Look at the code, analyze it, you'll see you can do anything you want with it! Wordpress is not just for blogs, you can design a very professional website using wordpress.

You may well find that the themes available include the functionality which you want to pay for a coder to customize for you, so check the themes in detail and you will see some of them have all the features you would need, thus not needing to pay outside help. You can check out My Theme Shop for a huge choice of themes, for example.

Just be careful when you add custom stuff outsourced to a coder, as all that additional stuff can sometimes seriously slow your site down, depending on what you actually do to it. And you don't want to have a slow site.

    Hope this helps.
