How much does website name matter?

I have a couple of good ideas but they are taken.

Would I have any seo issues or legal issues if I picked something like that and just added a dash in there? For example instead of nicheexpert.com I used niche-expert.com (not actually going to use that site but its just for an example)

OR if I just went for a less catchy name do you think my traffic would be worse?

    It all depends...

What kind of website are you building?

Don't worry about the website name. Just make it relevant to what you're selling/offering, and avoid domain trademark issues. Make it relevant to your customers.

Relevant content is the most important thing I would agree, but old school SEO tactics such as related domain names still play an important role of where your website will end up being indexed.

I'll have to agree with this. I have seen some Sites with horrific names that totally overcame that and became successful in long run. To me, Facebook is just a stupid name. Just dumb and makes no sense, imo

It may help but in the overall scheme it will NOT matter. Just my 2 cents

A few years ago I would have said yes name matters a lot. But now I'm not so sure, at least in the traditional sense. You'll notice some of the fastest growing online companies now have names that range from the weird and indescribable ... to the ridiculous! (scratching head).

It's almost like if an outsider doesn't have to ask you what the name of your website or company means you probably miss the mark. Self-Explanatory names for online companies seem to be going the way of dial up modem. Still not sure why.

It gives you the impression the first people who started this (abstract name) trend started out the following way. They locked themselves in a room, in Silicon Valley no doubt, with a case of bourbon and a few joints to toke on and came up with a name. So, everyone else followed suit.

I don't think putting a "-" between would be a good idea although the risk of you getting in trouble is relatively low but you may end up directing traffic to the site without the "-"

For example "ebay" .. If I were to create a site called "e-bay", when people talk about my site, it is unlikely they would say "check out e dash bay"

      My opinions only though

Don't worry about the name. However, copying 100% of the website I would not recommend (both legally as well as ethically!)

Not all that important. Just make it simple and easy to remember. Needs to relate to what your content is going to be about.

If you plan on relying on google search engines to drive traffic to site then you will want to do some research and planning before throwing something up.

There are plenty of ways to drive traffic to your site without having to worry about SEO and search traffic.

There are numerous successful websites that have names with no correlation to the content of the site.

Naa... I would suggest using something that's going to help define you and your brand. A catchy name helps, but branding and authority from that is going to be one of your biggest assets.

Just remember that the site name and the brand name can be two completely different things. For example, many of my clients have dot com names of <city/industry>, but they name their business whatever they're going to name it. As long as your visitors can remember what to type in to visit you directly, it works. So you have 2 options-

    1) Get your brand name as your domain name (ex- FitnessChart.com)
    2) Get an industry domain name and use a unique brand name

The name of your website should be according to the services you provide. Moreover, the users rarely search for names including "-" so better avoid it.

There will be no more effect because after all website traffic depends on search engine optimization or SEO. You may choose another domain without using "-" between a domain if you think that another is better domain name.

well i think the name would not matter so much but will be a good idea if its easy to remember, the important thing would be what you build around your site and how much in people's faces you can get your site to be.

Very rare for a name to build a brand on its own. I recommend spending all your creative time and attention on the core of your product: its UVP, audience targeting, upsell path, etc.
