Is this normal for kindle?

I uploaded my first ebook for a term that is being searched in the amazon ebook section and I looked recently and I saw it is ranked #1 with no reviews or downloads. I start KDP select with the book tomorrow and was just wondering is this natural?

That depends entirely upon the niche/genre your book focuses upon.

If you have chosen a niche that has virtually no books competing with you, beating them may be easy. On the other hand, if your niche has thousands of established books already selling well, then the likelihood of of debuting at number one is extremely remote.

It is in the mental niche and there is competition with other books, but not enough to where I didn't expect to rank in the top 6 after using kdp select

I've never dealt with kindle, so I might be way off base - Is it possible it's only showing in the first spot because it's your book, from your account, you're browsing on? Have you verified it's in the #1 spot from a different computer, not using your own account?

I have been out of my account and it still appears at #1

It's not only possible, but also probable, that you will rank first if there's little or no competition.

you're talking about reviews and downloads. But what about sales? As pointed out, if you're in some obscure category then just one or two sales can get you at #1 in a sub-sub-sub category

If with "downloads" you mean "free downloads" through a KDP free promotion, what you're seeing is the rating in the FREE section, which is different from the paid section

If the niche is tight, but popular, it's possible. I had a cookbook rank #1 without any outside promotion with KDP Select in both the free and paid Top 100 lists for the niche.
