Default Warriors Beware - Slideshare Virus issue

Just wanted to offer a heads up to steer clear of Slideshare.net - the online presentation sharing site at least for the time being.

Since Thursday, about 15 folks I know who have visited the site and clicked on links have had suspicious looking pop-ups show up on their screen saying their machine has been infected by a virus, and then some additional popups that are impossible to get rid of.

Most folks have been able to escape by closing their browsers or shutting down their computers.

Don't know if its just scary mischief or something more serious. But its happened to enough folks I know, that I thought I would put out a warning for any of you who post your stuff there, or view stuff there.

No word from Slideshare on exactly what is going on. And these aren't suspicious links -- these are regular links on the site to view slideshows, log in, etc.

Never experienced anything like that before. But thought I would save you a fright.

Sounds like they are selling virus removal software. I hate that phony popup "virus detector." It's supposed to scare you into buying. Then better safe than sorry. Stay Away.

I saw this posted over at Slideshare's Support site (don't worry, you won't run into the virus problem here): Slideshare virus infection simply by clicking slideshow links on site

It is better to stay far away from things like virus but what is the name and condition of the virus to kill?

Everybody who's using Firefox should install the NoScript extension. It totally eliminates all this junk unless you allow a site that serves viruses, and that's on you.

Shouldn’t any paid up network firewall suppose to stop things like this? Let me tell you something, I am often disturbed by the performance of my anti virus. Sometimes it makes my software corrupted, and not just any anti virus, many of them does the same thing.

Any way thanks for the advance warnings.

Which anti-virus software are you using?
