Are articles/blog posts absolutely necessary for promotion?

Hi, guys

I have a database-driven site, which is complete at it's first phase. It is a web aggregate of telecommuting jobs, sort of like flexjobs.com but free. I feel silly writing articles because this is not an article content site, but just rather a collection of jobs. Seeking advice from you, experts, do I still need to make a sort of "blog" section of the website, or promote with other means? Social sites, maybe press releases, classified ad postings. Dunno. Thanks!

Here's the link if you are curious. My Telecommuting Jobs

Content can still help. Maybe consider adding a blog page to your database-driven site and write about the different aspects or telecommuting and working from home. For example, you could write about the area of customer service (a big work at home category). Just a thought.

Try to create a compley promotional strategy. Content on your website should only be a part of it. Never forget why you are creating content! Are you doing it for SEO or to distribute that content and get visitors from those distribution channels?

You should try to get guest posts on relevant popular blogs and also build a list. You can offer a relevant white paper for subscription, like 5 tips to increase you productivity when working from home, etc.
You should also try other methods like LinkedIn marketing (this is my main focus now), a big part of LinkedIn's users are use it support their careers, a job site like yours would be highly relevant.

Awesome advice so far, guys. Keep'em coming!

You are right, there is no "content", per se. The site is a database of jobs. I was thinking too about approaching some bloggers with the guest post. As far as the list goes, I am planning to offer email subscription for the daily job updates according to the user-selected keywords.

The blog should be an important part in your overall content marketing strategy. Blogging has great SEO benefits, makes you look like an authority source in your niche, keeps visitors on your site longer and gets your site more backlinks (companies who blog receive 97% more links to their site).

if you want to build a long term business you'll definitely need a blog for the following reasons:

1.) It builds brand and give you authority on the niche
2.) It helps in building relationship with your target audience. Sure you can make money by simply promoting offer after offer and make you money but it will not make you more money in the long run.
3.) It helps add to your traffic , when SEO kicks in you'll definitely get extra free traffic and leads.

If you just want to make money online then blogging is not really important.

4.) It gives people a reason to come to your site beyond just looking for product/service
5.) A general blog based on your niche can attract content writers (and their audience) from their own (non competing) blogs

Think about people with services that are complimentary like resume writing, training for skillsets. Even HR directors or companies who want additional exposure are potential content providers. It is up to you to charge for that exposure or use it as a point of differentiation in the marketplace. Either way you will get content that will get more traffic to your site with minimal work on your part.

Articles and blog posts are going to help the promotional activities only if they are meaningful. If you are just posting the articles for the sake of posting, then such promotion is not going to be of any help.

If you are starting with paid advertising you do not need one right away. It would take time to gain SEO benefits from content anyway.

You mentioned FlexJobs as a competitor. I looked and they have an outstanding blog that probably pulls in a lot of traffic. They have a lot of content that provides value to their visitors and establishes them as an authority.

    Hi Dadadada,

Your site, and what it is offering, is very practical and interesting. If I were looking for a job, your site would be one I'd want to find and use. And, it could definitely benefit those (who are looking for a job) to find and read about what to consider.

Although blogging is rather new to me, I have engaged in a blog conversation here and there WHEN a topic has attracted my attention. What I find fascinating is that people DO love to share their thoughts. And, those interested in job listings would find your site well worth the discovery.

If a blog is written simply, but with good content, it can be very appealing for others to read. And, if it has a vehicle to get it out there for others to see, it is certain to receive ongoing traffic.

It is especially helpful to share blogs where it is seen by a wider range of viewers who may not actually be searching for a job, but can be noticed on behalf of a friend or family member who might be. In other words, EXPOSURE is what is getting others aware of your product. As a matter of fact, after viewing your site, I immediately tried to think of someone I know who might be looking for work.

I would say, then, it goes viral !

Just recently I have discovered a marketing system that sets up an integrated blogging machine, shares my blog in the rss cocktail provided, and helps it get out there to a highly expansive audience. This blog tool is picking up the slack of where my time and resources are limited, and all is free. I have cancelled my other accounts that charge me for what purported to be similar, but actually were a far lesser service. Now I am able to interact with a network of other bloggers who freely share their blogging skills with others in that same network. And my own product is viewed by others in the network, as well. I found this to be a very practical and effective way to share my wares.

Well, first and foremost, please do something about the loading time! It takes so long for your website to load, and that's a dealbreaker for many visitors.

I'd say writing articles is a great way to do some onpage SEO work! You can write articles about anything related to getting a job or stuff like that, how to behave during an interview, how to write a resume, how to ask for a raise... there are so many things you can write about that are related to your niche!

Thanks for mentioning. I was wondering how it works for others.

This is just a first phase of the site development, and one of my priorities is the speed.

I was an idiot to sign up for godaddy shared hosting. I might have to change the ISP as well.

Content based back-links and content marketing both are still considered as high quality. You need create a blog on your website and start posting articles there (not in bulk). You should keep in mind that quality and interesting content can help. So never compromise on quality of your content.

This is very simple but excellent advice; it is the foundation of good and effective blogging. Thank you for it!

  • I wouldn't say its absolutely necessary but it would help. The more quality, unique content you have that would help people find jobs, the better.

Yes blogging on tips on how to get successful in a particular job would greatly help.

However, if you feel like you do not have the time to this today or for whatever reason, you may use the powers of social networks like facebook and twitter to let your site go viral via sharing with your friends and your friends's friends and connections.
