Keyword research results - Who to trust?

I'm a bit confused about keyword research. I thought I was doing it right until today. I used Market Samurai and found a keyword phrase that I wanted to target. It estimated that being #1 in google for that keyphrase I would get roughly 500 visits. This was under phrase match.

I finally made it to the first page on google for broad, phrase, and exact. I think I'm around #8 or #9 on the page. So far the traffic hasn't been coming in for that keyphrase.

Then I went over to SEOBook.com and used "the keyword tool".
Low and behold...it says that my overall daily estimate for that keyphrase is like 4 hits!

Looks like I need to target better keywords.

Market Samurai is usually pretty accurate. I would suggest to check many different tools on your key phrase before final judgment.

    Hi there, new to WarriorForums.

The problem is, the discrepency between Market Samurai, Google Adwords Keyword Tool and other sources sometimes varies in the hundreds of percentage points. There's an argument that not everyone will be the same, fine, but exactly who can we trust when situations like the above happen? I have experienced this quite a few times.

When doing keyword research make sure you select "all countries and territories to get the best globam number unless you are just tratgeting a specific state/region.

Being on position 8 for such a highly searched keyword will not bring you many visitors indeed because when poeple search for things they usually find what they need without the top 4 listings so aim to have your site in that region if you want to experience a significant burst in traffic.

Some differences can exist between the keyword tools but because you ideally want to rank #1 in google because it is used the most worldwide i would trust the google keyword tool.

Another thing you can do is check out the top sites and put them into Quantcast - Home and see how many visitors they are getting to roughly give you a potential of the types of numbers you will be getting.
