How much hosting do I need?

I am having this problem since January when my website continues to grow. I already tried two different webhosts and still I am not satisfied. Do I need a dedicated server or VPS?

My website data looks like this.

Average monthly views = 800K
Average monthly impressions = 1.8M
A wordpress blog with 183 posts and 5 pages. Each post has only 1 photo and not more than 400 words.

Can someone recommend a good hosting package for this type of site.

I am considering wiredtree.com but I want to hear other suggestions. I think I need at least 2T monthly bandwidth?

Thank you

What problems are you having? It would be a good idea to find out what your resource usage is in terms of memory, CPU, I/O etc because "views" and "impressions" doesn't really mean much.

My current host always telling me that my site is abusing the resources and /or my site always reaches the allowed resources so it is down from time to time whenever a post gets viral.. The support always telling me that the shareaholic plugin always cause trouble... even with 20 visitors on-line, sometimes the CPU usage is 80%. I am still at shared server and will move to VPS by the end of the month but I want to hear some advice. Thanks

I don't think you have huge traffic or a very large database for your site to consider VPS yet. Rogue scripts can be a headache though. You may write to the plug-in creator about this issue.

For sites with similar size, I have not faced any problem with a premium package from mainstream shared hosting companies such as hostgator or bluehost. Often I have had better experience with shared hosting with hostgator or similar hosting than a self managed VPS.

How about opting for an affordable cloud hosting... you'll get a hosting value with a lot of room for your growth without upgrading or thinking of transferring to another server...

I am actually considering getting a cloud from digitalocean.

80% of what? What type of CPU, what number of processes? If you're using too much memory, it will spike the CPU usage. It sounds to me like you just need a better host. Most of the social media plugins, to be honest, are junk resource hogs.

"Cloud" refers to the back end infrastructure, on a real "cloud" platform, most functionality is transparent. Cloud is also defined VERY differently depending on the provider. Research first.

Are you planning to manage, configure & secure that server yourself, or pay an administrator to do it? Those are not managed servers...

I think cloud hosting is fantastic. We use AWS and we couldn't be more pleased. Yes, given our growth and size, we now pay $400/month for hosting, but we haven't had an even minor outage in ages despite that fact that our traffic can fluctuate wildly.

That said, to really take advantage of cloud hosting -- and to a lesser extent to really take advantage of a dedicated server or even a VPC -- you have to have some solid technical ability. I've done web development/DevOps for the last 15 years so setting up a solid technical architecture was something I felt confident to do. We use a reverse-proxy full-page cache (something it sounds like you might benefit from), load balancing, backend in-memory caching, master/slave databases, and horizontally scalable webservers, and resource-based autoscaling to get the results we get. I'm not saying you need to do all of this, but if you're not, you're really not harnessing the power of the cloud -- you're just paying for it. In that case you might get better performance, cheaper out of a dedicated box or even a high end VPS.

Do you have a technically-minded friend you can talk to about the specific challenges your site is facing? Because I think with a question like this there are too many variables to really get a good answer on a forum like this. Moreover, people on the WF have many talents, but for most of them their technical ability is limited to using whatever webhost they happened to sign up for. If your site is growing fast, you need some solid, unbiased advice and this really isn't the place to get it.

As for a recommendation of a good provider I would suggest KnownHost for managed VPS or dedicated servers. FYI, I do not have any stake in that company.

They are extremely knowledgeable, very quick on customer service, reasonably priced... the have their "stuff" together if you know what I mean and sooooo many other host do not which is a nightmare.

I recommend splitting the hosting in three parts web app, mob app and database and images hosting place.

First we can form a VPC in AWS and separate EC2 instance under the VPCs for all the services like web, mob, database, images with autoscaling.

For hosting images, we can use S3buckets.

I have around 25x your traffic, and I stay under 2TB of traffic.

As I understand you have a light website, so you not need have a top processors.

You can try webtropia, a german firm, take their top server and you stay under 150 Euro month.

OK, looks to me like you need a VPS, however are not particularly tech savvy, nor should you need to be IMO...

I'd look for a host with semi-managed or fully managed VPS hosting, for what you are doing... cloud infrastructure is really only needed for high traffic/tech eCommerce and web apps, not for running a website with some posts, not with the loads you are describing.

Could is great, it is just overkill for most client's needs.

I highly recommend liquidweb or softlayer if you want to use VPS or dedicated server. However if your previous hosts complaining about CPU usages, May be your plugins may consume high server resources.

Akk... in my opinion those hosts are simply over restricting their users in order to force them to upgrade to much more expensive VPS plans.

      Sound familiar?

      "I want a SSL cert."
      "I want a dedicated IP."
"I want to run more than 10 wordpress plugins"...

The host tells you that you need to upgrade to a VPS, so you go from your $4-$10 a month plan to a $30-$200 or more plan... plus now you have to become a server admin to run your VPS... usually... or pay a lot to have it managed for you.

I decided to build a different company, maybe not the biggest yet... however I really just want to provide the most robust service for the money for tech savvy and non tech alike.

Other companies seem more concerned with selling you some bogus plan for a ton of money, then charge you again for doing things like simple setups, etc.

You need a dedicated server to host your website. Sharing hosting is not ENOUGH! With this kind of traffic you are already comfortably earning a good income. Just fork out some money to pay for your hostings
