Please Explain Domain names with Hosting

Hi Guys

Over the last couple of years I've bought several domain names via godaddy. I have not set up any websites yet but have setup email addresses for 3 of the domains (not all of them which is currently 12). A couple of days ago I renewed one of the domain names and have been informed that the hosting for one of the email addresses is about to expire which means I won't be able to access that account. The renewal cost seems high so I want to understand how this all works.

Can I move hosting to another company? If so, how do I do this? Do you have any recommendations for good service and low cost?

When the domain names expire, can I renew it with another company or do I have to renew it with godaddy? I would appreciate any replies using non technical language as I'm not a techie. Thanks!

I buy my domains at dynadot they are transparent with their operations namecheap is also a good place and used by thousands of people. See if you want to REALLY renew it otherwise leave it to die a slow death.

If you want to renew then you would need hosting which you can get bluehost get the unlimited domains pack since you have more than one domain. Once you bought the hosting you can point your domains to bluehost from Godaddy domain manager. So you can renew your domain at Godaddy and hosting at bluehost.

My recommendation is Namecheap, but there are other reliable hosting providers as well. Some even charge as low as $5 per year to host unlimited domains, email included - Hostbunnies.com for example, and there are more.

After your have transferred your domain to a new registrant, you can renew it there and you can forget all about Godaddy. Many people, myself included, prefer to buy domains from godaddy using coupons and when it comes time to renew, transfer to another registrant, which is cheaper.

What us the purpose of renewing the domain names OR the hosting if you are not going to build websites? You can get free email accounts from gmail and such.

You can transfer the domain names from GoDaddy to Namecheap or any other domain registrar you do not need to keep renewing them with GD.

If you are not going to build websites but still want hosting you should just find the cheapest one or just use the Namecheap hosting or whatever domain registrar you go with.

DO NOT use Hostgator or any of the other EIG companies for hosting. There are dozens of threads in here about that.

you can renew your domains and simply purchase hosting with another hosting company. You would then use the provided nameservers to have your domain resolve to the new hosting plan with the other company.

  You can keep domain names registered with godadd and just host your site(s) with another host. You don't have to use Godaddy for hosting.
  
  Sign up for hosting with a host like bluhost.com,hostmonster.com etc. After that they will give you their name servers. You need to enter those in your godaddy account. Then you can create your email address on your web site on new host.

You can transfer your domains away from Godaddy (or any other registrar) after you have had them registered for 60 days with the registrar that you registered them at.

Like others above have said, Namecheap is a registrar to consider. They have good prices and their support is the best from any registrar I have tried (about 20 different ones).

Godaddy is great to initially register them at because they have some great coupon codes so that you can get a domain for as low as $.99. The only thing is that their renewal rates are higher than many.

Bottom line is you can register them and transfer them any time after your first 60 days with the registrar that you registered the name at.

As for hosting, you can host the names anywhere you want. However, like stated by others here and around the internet, stay away from and EIG owned hosting company or you will regret it at some point.

It sounds to me like you might have email hosted with GoDaddy as part of the domain package. This would require a yearly renewal that is separate from the domain name renewal. If you want to use email only, and you don't want to build a site or renew the email services through GD, you can still use mail forwarding which is a free feature.

With mail forwarding, you setup a custom email address like mark@mydomain .com and point it to a free Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook address.

GD won't store emails for you but it will automatically forward all emails sent to mark @ mydomain .com to your free address which will store them for you as normal.

If this is NOT what you have or are asking about, I apologize. It's a little hard to know exactly what someone's setup is without more details so I am just guessing.

  Thanks Mark. I appreciate it because I didn't know how email forwarding work. My intention is to set up a few websites in the future so I've just been using the email addresses linked to several of the domains.

Domains and hosting are independent of each other. You can purchase a domain at one place and host it at another by pointing the DNS to the other location.

If you are transferring a domain from one place to another then you will need the domain authorization key to do so. Some domain registrars have this information easily available and some you have to make a request.

I personally purchase and manage all of my domains (well many) through Hover... then I host through different web host (KnownHost is one). This makes it very easy for me to switch hosting companies if I am not happy without domain problems (being held hostage, etc.)... all I have to do is take the backup of my site to the new host and restore it... then go to Hover and re point my DNS... then tell the first hosting company bye-bye.

Just do a Google/Bing/Etc. search for ( EIG hosting companies ) and you can find out that way. There used to be a list of the main ones on wikipedia but there are issues going on there so most of the content of their info is not currently there.

Usually the 3rd of 4th result on a search will have a site with a good list. If you are considering one and aren't sure you can message me and I will be happy to check for you.
