Hello all,

I've spent a few days reading some of the content on this forum before I decided to venture in and join the conversation. It seems like there's a lot of folks here doing quite well for themselves and have made significant deposits in this tremendous database of knowledge. Therefore, as I'm sure happens with most new folks here, I'm simply seeking some advice.

I'd like to begin to dabble in the world of IM, but like most people new to this, I don't really how to find that single passion of mine that's also salable. In fact, I don't know if I can even identify my own passions! I recently got my MBA (yesterday was the ceremony, so REALLY recently) and that endeavor along with my career and marriage have absorbed all of my time for the past few years. I've not really had any time to pursue any interests! Now that I'm out of school, I need something that will keep me engaged and something that I can share that will help others. I am not the type of guy who is going to come home and sit in front of the TV all evening.

Problem is, as I mentioned, I haven't had time for a few years now to figure out what it is I really like doing. That's why I need your help. I'll tell you a little bit about me and maybe you can point me in the right directions.

I am a young man with a disability (a type of muscular dystrophy) who holds an undergrad in philosophy and an MBA in finance. I like to golf, even though I'm absolutely terrible at it, and I'm finally getting the opportunity to getting back into regular exercise. My wife and I love traveling and try to leave the country once a year. I suppose if I could identify one thing I really love to do is travel, but I know that this is an incredibly saturated market. I have considered starting a blog in traveling for disabled people, but that naturally limits my market and I'm not sure what kind of online coursework could be offered to that market.

To all who read this, thanks for sticking through this with me. I would welcome questions as, again, I really don't know where to begin. It's funny, really. I spent a couple years of my life with my nose in books learning how to be a good corporate employee. Now that I've been in the corporate environment for a while, I am beginning to figure out that I want to find better ways in my life to help others and make money as an outcome.

I'm realizing perhaps I should have named this thread a little better. I apologize for bumping, but I'm really hoping for some feedback.

I think a good travel blog is always a good start. Remember we do not all live in the same country so what you can bring to the blog from your personal travel would benefit others.

Your second task is to build a website and do keyword research SEO - you can do mostly on your own or you can outsource these steps.

Bottom line - stick with what you like to do and eventually it will start paying the bills.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I know that travel is a niche. There are magazines on it (broken down into niches), but I'm not sure how big it is. Writing this, however, I thought of something. You could start a Youtube channel, grow your audience, and become a Youtube partner (one stream of income). You could also start a blog and incorporate the Youtube videos within that. Given that the travel niche lends itself well to all things visual, you should also make sure to make use of social media to help build your following.

Just to let you know, golf is also a profitable niche. I've heard that it's also an expenive one, where people spend lots of momey. They are both physical (stuff on Amazon and the like) and digital products (downloadable video/e-book courses you can promote on Clickbank.com and such. Just do some research, pick a niche (assume golf is the more profitable of the two) and go with it.

    Good luck,
    Joey

      Thanks for the reply!

I'm not a naysayer, and by no means want to discount your advice. I will say this: when I said I'm terrible at golf, I meant that I'm really bad at golf. I'm sure there's better authoritative voices out there. That said, I don't want to just shuffle off your advice and do nothing with it. In your experience, how does a person with virtually no authority in a subject build a website surrounding that niche?

My desire is to help people, and I'm not sure that I'd be of much help to someone when my own knowledge is extremely limited!

Hello and welcome to the Forum,

I agree with Joey - Youtube channel and Blog

        1. YouTube channel that you can categorize into travel section and even a category on the challenges you face with your handicap. People love inspirational stories and would be interested in the challenges you face - how you overcome them, etc. It can create a very strong emotional bond with your audience (handicapped and non-handicapped folks, alike). You could become very inspirational for many people. If you sometimes feel depressed over this or that.. - you can youtube it and it create a very STRONG bond with your audience. Many, many of the super successful YT makeup women talk about the problems in their lives and it really helps them to connect.... it sets you apart from everyone else...

        2. You could even do golf as a category on your channel and blog - and the equipment you use and how you like to stay active. I am sure there are a lot of people out there who want to know how to stay active with their own handicaps. If you do regular golfing videos of yourself - maybe making a bad shot here and there... and saying something funny - "Humor Sells" and it can really be a plus for you to help connect with your audience. There are a lot more "Bad golfers" out there than good ones... folks can sympathize and laugh with you... I stink at golf - so I know.

        3. You can do a section on what you eat to stay healthy - everyone is always intereseted in this topic. Maybe you juice (or you can learn to juice)- you can share recepies and videos on what you juice to stay healthy - or if you lose weight w/ it... you can make an ebook/program and sell it on your blog/YT channel - or get affiliates to sell it 4 you.

        4. Maybe you can look at SpreadShirt.com and you can design your own tshirts - you don't need to hold any inventory - people simply click on the shirt in your store (I think the store may be free, no less) and you get something like 10 to 15% of the sale... Many successful Youtube folks have a SpreadShirt link for traffic to access and I believe they ship internationally, as well. You could come out with a handicapped line of tshirts - maybe funny sayings - or inspirational sayings... or maybe just inspirational tshirts...

Honestly, you can Google this stuff and copy ideas from other TShirt stores - everyone does this, I think. Google "funny handicapped t shirts" - Here is a link for an inspirational one: http://disabilityhorizons.com/wp-con...ty-T-shirt.jpg
***You can do the same for golf tshirts, as well - maybe funny golf tshirts...
and come out with a new design every month...

        5. You could even document your Internet Money making journey over time and help newbies learn how to make $$$ on the internet, as well. You are at the beginning of your journey - you can show how you went from Zero to $$$ - there must be many handicapped people who would LOVE to learn how to make $$$ online (+ non-handicapped, as well)- Everyone in the company that I work at wants to learn how to make $$$ on the Internet - seriously, everyone.

        6. Any product you buy and use from Amazon - you can make a video about it and post a link and you can get 4 to 8% of the sale when you become an Amazon affiliate... Maybe you try out new golfing equipment or juicing or...

        Good Luck with your Journey!
        Sincerely,

        Doug

I don't know why everyone is trying to route you into "golf" - highly competitive niche.

I think you have identified a good niche and you may be selling yourself short. Yes, "travel" is competitive - but it's a huge market...not truly a 'niche'. In the US today, a disabled person can almost count on parking, entrance ramps, wheelchair access in many public venues, etc.

That's not true everywhere in the world. I think the idea of traveling with disabilities could be a good market for you. It could include golfing and other sports that disabled people can participate in and perhaps places where it doesn't matter if they aren't great at the game or need special accommodation.

You don't have to offer "online coursework" - you could promote books or special equipment designed for those traveling with disabilities. I think if you really research it - you might have a good niche. You might branch out from there later - but it's a good place to start and become an "authority" through your blog. You can also brand yourself by writing some factual books (Anazon Kindle!) on places you have traveled and the stories - both funny and frustrating - of hurdles you faced due to your disability.

When you think about it - traveling with a disability would be much easier if there were a "report" (done by you) available for a small fee that gave a list of accommodations, sightseeing venues, local or regional activities and listed the pros and cons of those places for someone with various levels of disability.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Thanks for all the responses and assistance.

Let me hit you with another question: I'm looking at hostgator for hosting services. Any opinions?

Also, for the purposes of blogging, what's your preferred platform? I know a lot of folks use wordpress, but I'm positive there's plenty out there to choose from.
