I was thinking that on a forum like this there are a lot of experts in their specialty.

If you were to really drill down into your area of expertise and produce a thesis to complete a PhD level qualification what area would you focus on?

The criteria for your topic would be:
  • It should be your own original work.
  • It should be beneficial to the wider scope of a business aims.
  • It should show originality in the methods used and/or conclusions drawn.
  • About 200 pages (double spaced) of well delivered material.

It does seem to be a tough area in business to find a PhD worthy topics versus the sciences.

What area would you like to become an expert in to this extent and share with the next generation of business leaders?

'Current trends in internet marketing' would be another interesting topic as we are witnessing a huge shift in marketing strategies however things are moving so fast that what holds true now probably would not be the optimal strategy in 3 years and researching topics in depth might not be the best option as you have to constantly evolve.

The potential impact of virtual technology on internet marketing.

You'd struggle without a very firm understanding of internet marketing, of course. Oculus VR is set to change the internet landscape, though. Maybe it'll give you some ideas for a topic!

These are 2 topics I haven't found any report about:
    - Crowd-sourcing in online marketing - How to harness the power of collective knowledge in creating and running online marketing campaigns/operations.
    - How to implement 'The Lean Startup' method in two-sided markets or businesses that require network effects.

Jenny, I am interested in your second idea about the lean startup methodology in two-sided markets. Could you elaborate a bit more on any ideas you might have in this area?

My Master's thesis was about multi-sided markets so this is an area I'm very much interested in. The issue stems from the 'chicken-and-egg' problem of a two-sided market: it's hard to get suppliers on-board without buyers and at the same time buyers wouldn't want to visit an empty market. Literature has suggested many ways to solve this, but most require big up-front investments.

'The Lean Startup' movement is, on the other hand, about staying lean and building a minimum viable product (MVP) to prove that your hypotheses about the market are correct and the business model is viable.

So how to build a MVP in the case of a two-sided market, stay lean and test hypotheses is something that hasn't been talked much about. I would think such a topic will have lots of potential and practicality in the startup world.

I did a course that dealt with the lean startup model but it wasn't taught very well. The topic itself is interesting and should be the way forward for most startups.
