How Much should we Ask?

Dear Fellow Warriors,

We recently received the following inquiry regarding Advertising on our site:

"I've recently looked over your site and believe that your reader-base and visitors might be a possible advertising venue for us.

I am interested in traditional link advertising as well as using link "blurbs" on certain pages of your site, or on certain articles. Perhaps even submitting articles. This includes but is not limited to purchasing a post also. We are open to any idea that would allow us to capture interested readers, but would prefer to avoid the traditional "Ads by Google" and "Sponsored Links" sections.

Please let me know if you'd be open to discussing advertising possibilities further."

We have not yet previously sold Advertising like this on our sites, so ...

Our Question is ...

How Much should we Ask this person / potential Advertiser for in terms of these types of requested Advertising on our site?

Right now our site (for this discussion) has a Google Page Rank = 5/10 and a 3 Month Average Alexa Rank = 196,545

So again ...

How Much should we ask for each of these types of Advertising on our site?

And/or ...

Should we ask them to make us their Best Offer?

In which case, what would be the Minimum we should Accept / Entertain for our site at this time?

Any and All of your responses and help in these regards would be Most Appreciated!

Thank you all for all of your participation and help! and Have a Great Day!

Thank You for your prompt and helpful response, snakez0r!

I can't believe that at least some of our Fellow Warriors don't have some experience with and/can help us with their responses regarding how we should price these types of private ad placement for our sites

Doesn't anyone else have any Experience with Selling these types of "private ad placement(s)" on any of your sites?

And if so, how did / do you price these types of private ad placement for your sites?

Do you have / use some kind of "forumla" based on Page Rank? Number of Unique Visitors? per Day? per Month? and/or what else?

Again, Any and All of your responses would be Very Helpful (to many of us here, right?! ) and Much Appreciated!

Thank You for your prompt and helpful response, snakez0r, and Have a Great Day!

I think these may be just clever (?) spam. I've gotten 2 of these in 2 days for different sites of mine, both ugly old sites that get hardly any traffic ("no data" in Alexa), that I've not touched in years. Trust me, no rational person would ask about advertising on those sites.

Another tipoff is that they don't mention their site or product by name, making me think they just mass emailed that same message.

A final clue is that I've had sites that got tons of traffic and never had any advertisers email me like that.

Here is one of the emails I got:

          "Hello,
We are trying to get more visitors and to increase our website traffic, so I want to ask you do you sell advertising on your site and how much do I need to pay you for 1 month?.
          Regards,
          "

Notice there is no name below "regards", nothing about what type of ad they want, they don't ask how much traffic I get, etc.

Dear Jeff and Chris, and Fellow Warriors,

          Thank you for your responses,
          Jeff and Chris!

We are sorry to hear that is sounds like you received very similar, apparently "bogus" messages recently

However, in our case, I have been in further discussions with this potential advertiser today, who happens to be a Very Popular online Diamond Store/Retailer, namely Abazias.com! , and ...

I subsequently discovered what they Really Want is Paid Articles / Blog Posting "Advertisements" on our site.

And although we do also sell some Diamond Jewelry, this category is not really a Major Focus of our site / business, and we don't really plan on going "head to head" with the Major Diamond Retailers anyway, and we have Many, Many Other Products too! , so ...

This certainly seems like a potentially Mutually Beneficial and Profitable business relationship for us!

          Wouldn't you all agree?

However, Now I Really Need to Know / figure out How Much do I ask them / charge them for Paid Articles / Blog Posting "Advertisements" on our site?

...and for the following two (2) different options we are (still) discussing, namely:
1)Our Staff Writers write the Articles for them, based on the Topics they request / supply?
          2)
          They provide the Articles?

We are also in further (secondary) discussions regarding their placing / buying
"text links" and/or "blurb" somewhere on our sites, which we also need to figure out how to price , but again, they are primarily currently interested in Buying Paid Articles / Blog Posting "Advertisements" on our site, so ...

Again, we First need to figure our How Much do I ask them / charge them for Paid Articles / Blog Posting "Advertisements" on our site?, so ...

How do you all think we should "price" these various options for these types of Paid Articles / Blog Posting "Advertisements" on our site?

          Again,
Any and All of your responses and help in these regards would be Most Helpful and Appreciated!

Thank you again for your responses, for all of your participation and help! and Have a Great Day!

My comment is that you mark your own price and make sure you deliver enough value for it.

            Other value-add entities:
-inline text, image ad, review posts, forum sticky thread, email promo to list, another few months of free advertising and so on. (The sky is the limit.)

Just as what Jeff has pointed out, just be mindful. Sometimes, there are people out there doing their price survey to see how much they should charge. =)

            Good luck,

            Cheers,
            John
