Site backlink in forum profiles really drive traffic?

In any forum thread, if you click on a forum members profile name, it takes you to a profile page and typically a backlink pointing to their website can be found in there.

Is this an efficient tactic to advertise your website and drive substantial traffic?

Do you ever click on these links?

Have you ever used this yourself?

I do click on the profile name links sometimes. Doesn't everybody?

If i was going to use this tactic myself, i would promote my services. Not an ebook. So to me it's a form of brand advertising. And that's what i do. I'm an "Ebook Selling Consultant". That's why you see it there.

    Makes sense?

Nice idea, but I just checked the source code on this page and it turns out that all homepage backlinks are actually rel="nofollow", this means Googlebot, Bingbot and others don't count them. So there is no link juice here.

This has nothing to do with natural or unnatural linking.

There's traffic, and then there's traffic.

There have been a lot of people on this forum whose links I have followed from their profiles. Not once have I ever subscribed to anything, nor have I ever bought anything. Usually, it's checking on things like cloaked links to see if those people are either breaking the rules or simply full of "organic fertiliser."

If that's the kind of traffic you want, have at it. For real visitors, sig links are much more effective when done right.

As for link juice and natural/unnatural linking:

This forum made both home page and sig links nofollow even before the Freelancer acquisition, so there was no link juice to be had. Doesn't stop the link spammers from polluting the pool, though.

@Ayawa, both profile links and sig links are "unnatural" in the sense that the person doing the linking is also the beneficiary of that link. However, they are so common and, for the most part, benign, that they are not penalized unless taken to extremes.

"Natural" links, on the other hand, are earned. If you link to your site in a sig, it's not earned. If I like your site and link to it (on my own site or via social sharing, for example), that link is earned and therefore, natural.

                  See the difference?

  • I know for a fact I get traffic this way, cause I see it in my analytics. This forum also allows you to see the last people that visited your profile, which is further proof

And yes, I know people click on the profile links, I guess what I meant was what percent of people click on them? From what I can gather, and correct me if I'm wrong, it would probably be something like 1 out of 300 or so?

If forum profile links are your main traffic driver then you're simply wasting your time. To tell you the truth I get more traffic from the link in my signature.

If I see someone post something smart, well written and unique, then I sometimes click the link to their blog to learn more about them or see if they have anything else worth reading. So yes, it can be valuable.

I don't know about you guys, but I only see signature links show up on Wednesdays, whats up with that? They used to show up everyday. I tried turning off my ad block and still couldn't see them.

I'd like to check the code to find out if sig links are nofollow as well, they probably are... According to Google this is actually in our benefit as sites that have a ton of links pointing to them that all originate from just one other site are viewed as webspam. Obviously Google is generalizing and being lazy with their algorithm, because let us not forget about the 5% of link droppers out there who are legit and not just spammin'.

    For direct traffic, yes.

    For SEO, not so much.

Also, don't get your hopes up when trying to drive direct traffic.

I use mine primarily for BRANDING.

I think the link in profile is a good way to build backlinks. But its hard to tell that you will get substantial traffic from it.

Some forum follow the Do-follow link. In this case the back link helps to increase the site page rank. There are many people who click on this link, it also positive to any site. So It is necessary to make back link.

just 1 in a 100 seldom visit your website via that means, hence chances of driving traffic out of it is very slim

I wouldn't necessarily say it's good for SEO (nor is it bad), but you can get good targeted traffic from forums, yes. In fact I usually get a few clicks a day just from people clicking on my forum signature on WF. Forums can be a decent source of traffic, but most forums keep these kind of links no-follow, so it really has no SEO value.
