When to move to a new hosting package

I have a Hostgator plan -- the Hatchling plan, which I think is the same as the Baby plan, but you can only have one domain.

I'm wondering how much traffic this plan will be able to handle.

Any ideas?

"Amount of traffic" doesn't really mean much. You need to know more about what resources you're using - memory/cpu etc. Are you simply wanting to host more websites? Any hosting plan that allows multiple websites should be fine.

    Are you currently having problems?

    What type(s) of site(s) are you hosting/looking to host/add?

My site is just articles, a few photos and some embedded videos, I think it's pretty lightweight as far as resource usage per visitor.

My traffic is very spiky depending on where (and if) an article gains traction. It handled over 20,000 visitors in a day, sometimes more than 350 on the site at one time. But I'm worried about what will happen if a bigger spike hits -- I don't want it to go down in the middle of a spike.

Sounds like your website is still pretty small and you likely don't need it. The biggest thing is getting unlimited addon domains. If you go up a package you'll be able to host more sites on that same plan. If you are wanting to host an additional site or two then it's probably time to upgrade!

  • You need to find out the data/memory/space available, that the host can process on this plan.

If you find that your website keeps going down due to capacity problem then that means you
need to upgrade to a higher hosting plan or one that offers unlimited Disk Space
    and memory resources.

With faux "unlimited" hosting plans, from the like of Hostgator and other not-great hosts, you'll run into other issues long before you hit a traffic cap. The RAM and CPU use is the biggest issue, as the cap is teeny tiny. They also overstuff/overallocate ("oversell") their servers with thousands of customers, and the server has I/O wait that slows down sites, and prevents any sort of sustained traffic level.

This is one of the dirty little secrets of shared hosting with lousy companies. This is why many users have terrible experience with them.
