is building a links directory on my domain a waste of my time?

Hi.
I have read some places that people are saying now that building a links directory on my site is not as important as it used to be.
I've seen software that does this for me... where you tell the person you've added them to your links page and ask them to give you a link back.

Is that still a good way to do link building?

Any help is appreciated for this newb.

      I agree. I think you will be better building links using other methods like social bookmarking and comment posting.

    The thing is that there's no decent way of getting good backlinks. Google knows that links in forums, social bookmarking sites and blog comments are user generated. They know that those also have the potential to be spammy and I've seen some really spammy social bookmarking sites! So what now? Write good content and hope someone appreciates it and gives you a link? Or do what you can, including link excahnge?

    Yes, it would be a waste of time to you if you are not too fast in making a back links if you want to gain more back links then hire professionals.
