How to use Dual Monitors when you just have 1 PC and 1 MAC

So, I was in a store today looking at some PC parts...and I saw that the guy behind the counter had 2 monitors so I thought that he was using Dual Monitors...when I looked closer I saw that 1 was running XP one MAC OS X but the dude only had 1 mouse and 1 keyboard.

So after searching abit I found this guide: How to turn your dual-monitor PC into a dual mac-PC system - Desktop - Lifehacker

It's abit old, but the same principles apply only that you use the newer versions of the software.

It basically connects both your computers trough your local network or something...but you can switch your mouse from one to the other in real time and you can also Drag and Drop files...witch is pretty awesome

You can also do this using one simple software independant usb kvm switch if it has extra usb ports (usb hub) for the mouse and keyboard. No software to install just plug and play.

I built my own Mac Pro using the effix dongle and I set it up side by side with my PC from one keyboard and mouse for some time.

I use both a dual monitor and a single monitor switch approach depending on what I need.

    My usual setup is:

    1. 2 port usb kvm switch which is hardware based (plug and play) and software independant (mac and pc compatible). Make sure it also has extra usb ports (usb hub capabilities) so you can plugin your mouse and keyboard.

    2. Plug the usb and monitor cables from each cpu into the KVM switch.

    3. Plug the usb receiver for my wireless keyboard and mouse into the KVM switch.

Now I just tap the button on the KVM and my screen, keyboard, and monitor quickly siwtch back and forth between my Mac Pro and my PC.

If I want dual monitor I just leave the monitor plugs connected to the cpus instead of the KVM.

Thanks for all the cool information guys! This has been my struggle for quite some time now, having to juggle between my mac and pc for different functions can be unsettling sometimes. Im going to try these out and let you know if it works for me. I hope I can use these seting with my pc because i am currently using Vista 64 bit and I know that there have been a lot of major compatibility issues with it.

    I'm with Josh.

I've been using KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switches to do with for the last 20 years. They're simple and reliable.

If I'm travelling (which is most of the time) and I want to access my computers back home I just use Windows Remote Desktop or PCAnywhere (or other similar).

This software you're referring to looks cool, but it's not a new solution to this problem and for some people maybe not the best so it's worth checking out suits each person.

the purpose of this is to show you how you can put your PC with his monitor side by side with your MAC monitor.

If you just want to use dual screen for your pc...just look and see if you videocard has two connectors so you can connect 2 monitors on your pc.

Or if it doesn't, add another videocard to connect the second monitor...I think thats how you can do it.

I just have 2 ports on my videocard.
