Making video tutorials

Hi Warriors,

I hope life is easy on you.

I have received quite a few requests from my clients asking me to make a walk-through video series for a particular subject.

Aside from camtasia, what other tool can you recommend?

Also, a headset with a noise cancelling mic is very much needed, what particular brand/model have you used?

I heard that the best time to do this is during the night time.

Any input you may provide will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Louie Tugas

I have been using the Captasia for a long time. Beside the Camtasia I have used some more apps. Such as Ulead Video Studio, Camstudio, Windows Movie maker/ Windows DVD maker or, some other apps. You can take a test of these if you want. You can take these apps free version from the internet. Headphone I use the Creative , Logitech & Suntech. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Louie,

I found myself in a very similar situation lately working on my udemy course.

I use Camtasia too for screen recording and it is amazing. However if you want to spare some bucks you can also use OBS (https://obsproject.com/). This is what gamers use to stream on twitch for example but it can also record your screen.

As editing programs I use the Adobe suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition) because I have it and I am pretty well accustomed to these programs.

Yes, the Blue Yeti is an amazing choice and you shouldn't have any problem with the background noise. However if you have problems you can always use Audition to cancel the sound, or a free GREAT software called audacity (Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder)

A similar worth mentioning USB microphone is the AudioTechnica AT2020. It does a great job and the price is quite similar. If you want a cheaper alternative you can look up the Blue Snowball.

There are also some other type of microphones you can use and I recommend you the shotgun type microphones. I personally use one (because I also had it on my DSLR) and I like it quite much. Frankly I don't want to upgrade to another USB mic, instead I want to upgrade to a better shotgun one

Hope this post helped you somehow and I wish you all the best.

    Regards,
    Rares Michael

I love Screencast-o-matic. I've been using it for years. You can either use it right online or upgrade to the pro version and download the software. It's like $15 a year or something.

I also favor Logitech noise-cancelling headphones. I started using them when I was doing transcription.

I'm fortunate that it's only me and hubby here, so I don't have to worry about background noise, unless the dog barks or the phone rings, in which case I just edit it out.

I second this about screencast-o-matic. As for microphone, I like the Plantronics headset with mic. It's great for narration and voice.

Unless you're on a Mac....and then ScreenFlow is the way to go - and at 1/3 of the price Camtasia for PC....just sayin'.

Nope, I haven't tried Tanida Demo builder. So far I have made up my mind to use Camtasia.

I'm on a Mac Pro and I use Camtasia as my primary tool. Don't skimp on a great microphone. I use a Shure SM7B with a Cloudlifter preamp. World-class audio is guaranteed with that set up and great audio is rarely heard on most of the videos that I see produced.

Unfortunately, when 'free' you generally get exactly what you are paying for. If quality could be produced on the cheap, products used to improve quality could never be sold.

If camtasia is too expensive, use camstudio which is a free software. You will get a good video with this software too. Some people sign up for the trial version of Camtasia to see if it is something that they want before they purchase. This goes to show that the software is great and the sellers believe in it so much that they know you will love it. Your other option is to make a powerpoint presentation and convert this to video using Active Presenter.

Getting a professional microphone is something that we rec. Good ones cost less that $100 and connect to your USB port and make a big difference in your mini movie. That will make you sound more pro.

Maybe you can consider using these two applications:
Jing: This software is very convenient to use, and the video quality is fine. (Note that only five minutes' recording is permitted in trial version).
Apowersoft Screen Recorder: A free online program that can be used on webpage. It will be a nice alternative to the former one, if you are reluctant to buy it. This program supports recording video in multiple video formats without any limits.

Well...That depends since you are in the Philippines.

Is there a birthday party on the block? Then night time would be horrible.

Are you waiting until just before sunrise? Yikes, the roosters will start to crow.

Overall, night time would be best because less Jeepney and Trike noise, though.

FlyingAnt recommended BB Flashback Express, which is solid, but it's big brother, BB Flashback Pro is even better. Not quite as good as Camtasia, but a very good alternative.

If you're on a budget, the Samson Go Mic Portable for $39.99 is very solid. You can hear the quality here:

If you can't afford Camtasia, I've been quite happy with Bandicam. I use it all the time to record training tutorials for my assistants and also to record how-tos for my clients that purchase websites from us.

Take it easily. You should choose the time at NIGHT, if you have noise. Night is the peace time. Beside the Camtasia, you can use the windows movie maker/ windows dvd maker, Ulead video studio. Creative, Logitech these brand's products is good, I think. Thanks
