What exactly is Web 2.0?

Hello everyone. I'll make this short and sweet.

What exactly is Web 2.0 and how do I implement it? I did a Google search on the subject, but a lot of the information was very confusing and extremely 'techie." It's all about web promotion through social networking right? Is it about generating free traffic? I'm interested in anything that can help me to obtain free traffic. If someone can explain this to me I'd appreciate it.

I know people may sell stuff about this here and so you can't tell too much. But, please elaborate and share as much as you can. Thanks and many blessings!

    Hi,

I'll try to explain what web 2.0 is. I don't make a claim that this is exactly what it is. I'm trying to explain what I know about it.

Let's say you do a search on Google.com about your favorite topic and google present you with a list of websites depending upon what they think is relevant to your search query. They have an algorithm running behind the screen, which matches the relevancy of any webpage with the keyword/phrase.

But who's Google anyway? They aren't the authority on any subject. They have definitely studied the subject of "data mining" to create a free tool called the search engines which makes it easier of a large number of people to quickly organize vast amount of data on your desktop by clicking a few buttons.

This has given rise to the concept called Web 2.0 where "normal people" like you and me decide what is good and bad or relevant or irrelevant. In short any service, which allows users to share/edit/rate, the online content falls under this category. A nice example is digg.com where users digg the post submitted by another user if they find it suitable/interesting/informative etc. The authority is in the hands of users not any computer algorithm. Of course this allows many people to manipulate the system as well. (spammers)

This is what I know about this Web 2.0 thing. If anyone else knows about this please post.

        Welcome to the forum AlwaysClassy.

This is part of the wikipedia definition:
"Web 2.0" refers to what was perceived as a second generation of web development and web design.

        PS.
Just to let you know, you thank people using the 'thanks' button found at the bottom right of each post.

Thank you Catherine for the welcome! I appreciate it. Also, I don't see a "thanks" button. I can only see the quote, multiquote, reply and edit buttons. Maybe newbies don't have access to that right away.

To everyone else, you too Catherine, do any of you use Web 2.0 in your business and has it been helpful to you? What are your favorite Web 2.0 sites? Does Twitter really work?

          Thanks again everyone. Blessings!

There's two concepts in Web 2.0 - on is social networking type websites like facebook, stumbleupon, digg where content is user generated and shared within the community.

The other is a web design that uses round, flashy buttons, curved corners, etc.

Web 2.0 is basically the new generation of web design that focuses
on user generated content, communication, and sharing i.e. social-networking
sites, social bookmarking sites, video sites, etc.

Right, here's my take. I'm new to the forum but I've been looking at doing my own web design recently and have invested in Photoshop. From my research there's a lot of misinformation on the net about what Web 2.0 really is.

I'm not saying I truly know what it is either. But my opinion is that a Web 2.0 design is often divided vertically into 3 sections and horizontally into 4.

From the top down we start with a text-based logo on a dark background normally aligned to the left. Often, the navigational menu is now being used as part of the header also.

Moving down, there is often a summary of what the web site is all about, although this is not always the case. Where it's used, the comments are often kept brief and original comedy can sometimes be used.

Then, you have the fundamental part of the web site that is split usually into three columns and organized in a way that is extremely pleasing to the eye. The text in each of these sections is usually 2-3 sentences long with a link to another page within the site.

At the bottom of the site, you'll have links to external sources, a navigational menu and some copyright information. As I'm new to the forum, I can't post links. But I can do my best to get you to this page I came across the other day on the Style Ignite web site. It will explain Web 2.0 in much more detail and summarise the layouts, colors and graphics used.

The article title/url is "analysis-of-web-20-design-layout-trends-part-1-clean-colorful-and-horizontally-divided" and it is on the Style Ignite.com web site. I hope you find it.

    Hope this helps,

    Connor

Quite a few of the implementations that I have seen involve the issue of press releases. And nothing else!

Web 2.0 is a meaningless term that covers the phenomenon of replacement of communication and content in favor of a gross exhibitionism or narcissism, catering to the insecure and lonely to command their attention and deluge them with ads of appeal only to the insecure and lonely.

That would be ironic on so many levels it'd need an elevator and possibly an FAA waiver.

I remember reading something like this. Web 2.0 was originally developed to make room for progression in web site design, they wiped out tables and grid formatting from being the standard and changed it to css where more room for creativity could happen. There was also something about duplicate content and hacker manipulation on websites was, quite a while ago sorry.

LOL ... Web 2.0 is just a marketing word that was made up ... It has no meaning. It was made up to refer to social networking sites such as myspace, facebook, and etc. In order to push the new technology as they called it, they needed a name and thus they came up with web 2.0 to make consumers think it was a web upgrade.

Fact is there is no web upgrade - It is just these social networks started using new technologies such as ajax and etc.
