It's definitely hard. And there's not enough info in your post to really give you a solid answer.

But, with that being said, here are some thoughts:

    1. Go after the keywords which you mentioned have no traffic. Don't believe everything that the Google / Bing keyword tools tell you about traffic. (and hey, 10 targeted visits a month from a keyword is great if you've got something to sell those visitors).

    2. Totally my opinion: Google is a chicken/copycat. They won't send any traffic to your website until they see you get traffic from somewhere else first. So what that means for you is to go after your keywords by posting content on authority sites and then send that traffic to your website. Think Facebook, Slideshare, YouTube, Hubspot, etc.

    3. It's a numbers game. Pick 100 keywords and put them in a spreadsheet. Make this spreadsheet your task list: Write a blog post for all 100 keywords. Put some on your blog and post others like I mentioned in point 2. Write one a day and you'll be finished by year-end. Share very one of those posts on social media. Interlink the posts. Do all the on-page 'seo' stuff with every post.

    Good luck!

        Hey there,

Sorry if I wasn't clear. What I'm saying is, do your own testing and see. Google themselves say the traffic data in Keyword Planner tool is their best estimate.

I hope that answers your question...

I use a tool called Long Tail Pro to cherry pick my keywords.

It returns a big list of related keywords and I'll often find long tail keywords I wouldn't have thought to search for.

Secondly, it has a feature called Average Keyword Competitiveness which returns a value for each keyword, 0 - 100.

The closer to 0 the easier it is to rank for.

Generally, keywords with a score of 0-20 will be your low-hanging fruit keywords to go after.

20-30 you can rank for with a little more effort (creating some backlinks).

The I.M. niche is a pretty competitive niche already.

I know this might sound weird but you can CROWDSOURCE your keyword research

    How?

    Go to reddit

Pay attention to the titles of certain subreddits

Use a scraper to scrape all words

Hire a VA to delete non-niche related keywords

Filter against Google Keyword Planner for Commercial value and search volume

Study your competition and try "borrowing" some keyword strings that they are using. Don't duplicate content. Incorporate it into your own unique content.

In any niche, it really helps if you know the niche, but this is especially true for the internet marketing niche. When I say "know the niche," I mean that you need to know which keywords people use to find stuff in the search engines and what motivates them to buy, so that you can better connect to them. This is not something that is going to happen overnight. You'll actually need to spend some time in it.

The reason it's good to know the types of keywords people use to find stuff is because keyword tools tend to run like a month or two behind, so by the time they show up in a keyword tool, there is already too much competition to rank for them (if the keywords are really profitable). When you know the niche, you're able to make "educated guesses" and get ranked before competition gets too stiff.
